Sydney Racing Carnival: The Royal Randwick
The Royal Randwick Racecourse is one of the two featured race tracks during the Sydney Racing Carnival, the other being the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. Three main race days are being held at Randwick during the carnival: the Australian Derby Day, the Doncaster Day and the Sydney Cup Day. Ten Group 1 races are scattered over the three race days.

Royal Randwick is just five minutes away from Sydney’s Central Business District of Sydney and it is the largest racetrack in New South Wales. Its circumference is 2,227 metres while its home straight is 410 metres. The track features sweeping turns and an uphill slope on the home straight. Races here are staged counter-clockwise and all races are facilitated by the Australian Jockey Club.
The Australian Derby Day which features four Group 3 races, two Group 2 races and three Group 1 races. The main attraction of this race day is the 2400-metre AJC Australian Derby which is a set weights race for races horses of at least three years old. The Australian Derby has a prize purse of $1.5 million and the winner takes home $900,000.
The owner, trainer and jockey of the winning horse will also get trophies worth $28,500, $500 and $500 respectively. The runner-up of the Australian Derby will get $300,000 while the third, fourth and fifth place finisher will get $150,000, $75,000 and $30,000 respectively. The sixth, seventh and eighth place finisher will get $15,000 each and the non-placers will get a subsidy of $200.
From 1932 to 1956, geldings were not allowed to compete at the AJC Australian Derby. The race distance was adjusted to 2,400 metres in 1972 due to the conversion of Australia to the metric system. On the first year of the metric system-adjusted Australian Derby, Gold Brick won the race. In 1978, the race was not held for the race was transferred to autumn.
No race horse has won the AJC Australian Derby more than once. However, Thomas Hales is the most successful jockey with six Australian Derby wins. He won with Richmond in 1875, Grand Flaneur in 1880, Navigator in 1882, Bargo in 1884, Trident in 1886 and Abercorn in 1887. Meanwhile, no race horse has won the AJC Australian Derby more than once.
The usual lead-up races for the AJC Australian Derby are the 2000-metre, Group 1 Rosehill Guineas which happens two weeks before the Australian Derby and the 2000-metre, Group 2 Tulloch Stakes which happens a week before. The distance of the two races and their schedule are ideal for preparation. The 2011 Australian Derby will happen on the 9th of April.
Meanwhile, the Emirates Doncaster Mile or the Doncaster Handicap is a handicap race for horse races of at least three years old and it has a prize pool of $2 million with $1.2 million going to the winner. The second, third and fourth place finishers will get $400,000, $200,000 and $100,000. The owner, trainer and jockey of the winning horse will also get trophies worth $9,500, $1,000 and $1,000 respectively.
The fifth place finisher in the Doncaster Mile will take home $40,000 while the sixth, seventh and eighth place finisher will get $20,000 each. The 2011 Doncaster Mile will come in the 16th of April and top gallopers such as Whobegotyou, More Joyous, Danleigh, Melito and Rangirangdoo are trying to make it to the final field.
The Doncaster Mile was first held in 1865 and it was won by Dundee. However, the first two-time winner of the race is Mildura when he won back-to-back in 1940 and 1941. This feat was also achieved by Blue Legend in 1946 and 1947 while Slogan II also won the Doncaster Mile in 1956 and 1957. Tudor Hill won in 1959 and 1960 while Fine and Dandy won in 1961 and 1963.
Super Impose won consecutive Doncaster Miles in 1990 and 1991 while Pharaoh is the latest horse to win multiple Doncaster Miles when he won in 1994 and 1995. Super Impose might be the greatest race horse to win the Doncaster Mile for he won it back-to-back and he also won the Epsom Handicap in the same years. No race horse has ever copied this achievement.
