Sydney Racing Carnival – Day 2: Rosehill Gardens
The Sydney Racing Carnival is filled with horse racing and fashion events that are highly anticipated by experienced and novice punters. Also, one of the highlights of the Sydney Racing Carnival is the Rosehill Guineas Day which features one Benchmark race, three Listed races, one Group 3 race, three Group 2 races and one Group 1 race which is the Rosehill Guineas. The Rosehill Guineas Day is an annual event that happens during the last week of March at the Rosehill Racecourse.
Located just 20 minutes away to the west of the Sydney central business district, the grass turf of the Rosehill Racecourse has a circumference of 2048 metres and a home straight of 408 metres. The racecourse features sweeping turns and all races here are staged clockwise. Race at the Rosehill Racecourse are governed by the Sydney Turf Club.
The benchmark race during Rosehill Guineas Day is the Benchmark 90 Handicap which has a race distance of 1300 metres and can be participated by horses of at least three years of age. The prize pool of this race is $70,000 with the top winner getting $42,000. The second and third place finishers will get $13,300 and $6,700 respectively. This is the last race on schedule during the Rosehill Guineas Day.
Meanwhile, the three Listed races are the N.E Manion Cup, the Epona Stakes and the Darby Munro Stakes. The N.E Manion Cup is a 2400-metre Quality Handicap race for race horses of at least three years of age. The prize pool of the race is $100,000 with the winner getting $60,000. The lowest handicap weight allowed for the N.E Manion Cup is 53 kilograms while the highest allowed is 61 kilograms.
The Epona Stakes is a 1900-metre quality handicap race for fillies and mares of at least three years of age and it has a prize purse of $100,000 with the top winner getting $60,000 plus a trophy worth $750 for the owner of the winning thoroughbred. The second and third place finishers will get $20,000 and $10,000 respectively.
The Darby Munro Stakes is a 1200-metre Quality Handicap race for thoroughbreds of at least three years of age. The lowest handicap weight allowed is 53 kilograms while the highest allowed is 61 kilograms. The Darby Munro has a $100,000 prize pool and the winner of the race gets $60,000 and a trophy for the owner worth $750. The sixth, seventh and eighth place finishers will each get $1,000.
The only Group 3 race on Rosehill Guineas Day is the Birthday Card Stakes which is also a Quality Handicap race for fillies and mares of at least three years of age. This race is contested over 1200 metres and the prize pool is $125,000. The winner of the race will get $75,000 and an additional trophy worth $950 for the owner. Participants for this race must weigh within the 53 to 61 kilogram range.
The Group 2 races on Rosehill Guineas Day are the Pago Pago Stakes, the Magic Night Stakes and the Ajax Stakes. The Pago Pago Stakes is a 1200-metre Set Weights race for two-year-old colts and geldings with each participating horse weighing 55.5 kilograms. The prize pool of the Pago Pago Stakes is $175,000 with the winner getting $105,000 and an owner’s trophy worth $1,150. Also, the winner of the Pago Pago Stakes gets an outright spot for the Golden Slipper Stakes.
The Magic Night Stakes is the fillies-only equivalent of the Pago Pago Stakes and it also has a race distance of 1200 metres. This set weights race requires that all participating fillies must weigh 55.5 kilograms and the winner of the race will get $105,000 off the $170,000 prize pool. The winner of this race also gets an automatic entry to the Golden Slipper Stakes.
The Ajax Stakes is a 1500-metre Quality Handicap race for thoroughbreds of at least three years of age and participating horses can weigh as low as 52 kilograms and as high as 61 kilograms. The Ajax Stakes has a prize pool of $175,000 with the winner getting $105,000. The second and third place finishers will get $35,000 and $17,500 respectively and the fourth placer gets $8,750.
The highlight event of the Rosehill Guineas Day is the Group 1, 2000-metre Rosehill Guineas which is a set weights race for three-year-old horses. Colts and geldings must weigh 56.5 kilograms while fillies must weight 54.5 kilograms. The Rosehill Guineas has a $500,000 prize pool with the winner getting $300,000 and an owner’s trophy worth $2,500. The runner-up for this race gets $100,000 as well.
Winners of the Pago Pago Stakes and the Magic Night Stakes will automatically compete at the Golden Slipper Stakes. The Golden Slipper runs for 1,200 meters at Rosehill and it is the richest race in the world for two-year-old Thoroughbreds due to its prize pool of AUD$3.53 million. This race is held during Golden Slipper Day which usually happens a week after the Rosehill Guineas Day.
Given the short distance of the Golden Slipper Stakes, competing horses cannot afford to make a mistake. Other Group 1 races that are held during Rosehill Guineas Day are the Queen of the Turf Stakes, the Vinery Stud Stakes, The BMW and the George Ryder Stakes.
