Sydney Racing Carnival – Day 4: Inglis Sales
The Inglis Yearling Sales is conducted by William Inglis and Son, Limited, a company that has been selling horses since 1867. Its 11-acre headquarters is in the Newmarket site which is just six kilometres away from the Sydney Central Business District and ten kilometres away from the Kingsford Smith Airport. Inglis also has a Victorian complex in Oaklands.
Inglis conducts yearling sales all year round through the Easter, Premier, Classic, Autumn and Scone Yearling Sales. They sell all types of race horses from weanlings, yearlings, broodmares and stallions. The main event of the annual Inglis sales is the Australian Easter Yearling Sales at Newmarket which attracts high-profiles buyers from Australia and the rest of the world.
Aside from the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sales, the Classic Sales is also conducted in Newmarket while the Premier and Autumn Yearling Sales are held in Oaklands. The 100-acre Oaklands was opened in January 1994 and is located about 30 kilometres north of the Melbourne Central Business District. The complex has seven stable blocks that can cater to 600 horses as well as a indoor sales auditorium.
The thoroughbreds that were sold through the Inglis Yearling Sales have profound influences in the horse racing circuits of Victoria and New South Wales. The Yearling Sales have produced future Australian Derby, Australian Oaks and Melbourne Cup winners. Also, 19 winners of the Golden Slipper Stakes went through the Yearling Stakes.
The 2011 Australian Easter Yearling Sales will happen from the 5th to the 7th of April and it will feature 529 yearlings. The sale features 36 lots from dams which have won Group 1 races. The lots include yearling from nine Group 1 winners such as Hasna, Warning Zone, Dowry, Flitter, Merlene, One Under, Champagne, Private Steer and Gee I Jane.
Also on sale on the 2011 Australian Easter Yearling Sales are 43 yearlings that have full or half relations to Group 1 winners such as Calveen, Mnemosyne, Currency, Private Steer, Samantha Miss, Shocking, Nom Du Jeu, Star Witness, Desert War, Calveen, Dance Hero, Racing to Win, Colourland Supreme, Makybe Diva, Nom Du Jeu and Black Caviar.
Meanwhile, the Flemington Straight Six is also well represented in the yearling sales as siblings of the last five Group 1 winners in this no turns race track are being put up for sale. The sibling includes half-brothers to Star Witness, Black Caviar, Headway and All Silent and a full-brother to Wanted. The 2011 Easter Yearling Sales director Jonathan D’Arcy said that the best thoroughbreds for sale in Australia and New Zealand can be found here. The 2011 Easter Yearling Sales will start at 11 AM, Australian time.
There are two ways to bid for a yearling: through phone or through online bidding. If you will bid for the 2011 Australian Easter Yearling Sales through phone, you can contact any of their bloodstock staff who can place bids for you. Before you can bid, you must accomplish an Appointment of Agent form from the Inglis homepage and fax this form to any of Inglis’ offices. Then, you can contact any of the bloodstock staff and discuss the yearlings that you would like to bid on.
If you will bid online, you must have register an account at Inglis Online and complete the required information. Bidding can only push through on Windows and Apple computers and it is advised that the computer has the latest version of Adobe Flash. After creating an account, you must request a bidding approval by clicking the link near the sale that you would like to place bids on.
On bidding day itself, you have to log in and click on Bid Now to enter the bidding website. At the bidding website screen, important information such as the previous lot, current lot, additional lot details, current bid and asking price are shown. A video of the yearling put up for sale is also shown and there is also a section wherein you can ask questions about the lot.
It is best to request for bidding approvals two days before the Yearling Sales so that it can be processed in time for the event. If you would just like to watch the sale, you can click the Sale Day Live link at the Inglis website. If you won a bid, you will be contacted by a representative of Inglis 30 minutes after the bid was finalized. The representative will discuss how the money will be transferred and how the yearling will be transported.
Aside from the 2011 Australian Easter Yearling Sales, Inglis will also conduct the March Thoroughbred Sale at Melbourne on the 18th and it will feature 260 lots, 72 of which are entered in the main and supplementary catalogues. These thoroughbreds for sale include mares from Redoute’s Choice, Encosta de Lago, Marscay, Canny Lad, Rubiton, Commands and Kenny’s Best Pal.
Also included in the March Thoroughbred Sale are 28 half-sisters to stakes winner Mercara, half-sisters to Queen of the Turf winner Neroli and Flemington Stakes winner Sly Sandra, the dam of Zedi Knight and mares in-foal to Magnus, Hardasun, I am Invincible and Bel Esprit. Also, 108 race colts and geldings will be put up on sale as well as 77 race fillies.
After the Melbourne March Thoroughbred Sale and the Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Inglis has the Australian Easter Broodmare Sale at Newmarket from the 12th to 14th of April and the Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale at Oaklands from the 17th to the 18th of April. The last Inglis Sale for April is the Red Centre Yearling Sale which will happen on the 29th of the month.
