Sydney Racing Carnival – Day 1: General Information

The Sydney Racing Carnival is an annual string of events that feature horse races, fashion events, yearling sales and many others. The Carnival usually stretches from the second week of March until the last week of April and it includes 18 group horse races that generate a huge number of bets from punters who closely monitor Sydney Racing Carnival betting odds.

The Sydney Racing Carnival starts with a racing mass at the Our Lady of Rosary Catholic Church in Kensington and then followed by the Myer Ladies Day which showcases the best Australian females in terms of fashion. Among the group races, three of which are Group 2 races and these are the 1500-metre Ajax Stakes, the 1200-metre Magic Night Stakes and the 1200-metre Pago Pago Stakes. The Magic Night Stakes and the Pago Pago Stakes are both set weight races but are exclusive to female horses and male horses respectively.

Meanwhile, the Ajax Stakes is a quality handicap race. All three races have the same prize purse of $175,000 and trophies worth $1,150 for each winner of the three races. Also, the Rosehill Guineas Day features the Group 3, 1200-metre Birthday Card Stakes quality handicap race for fillies and mares of at least three years of age.

Finally, the main attraction during the race day is the 2000-metre, Group 1 Rosehill Guineas which is a set weights race which has a prize pool of $500,000 with $300,000 going to the top winner. Aside from these group races, the Rosehill Guineas Day also features Listed races such as the 2400-metre N.E Manion Cup, the 1900-metre Epona Stakes and the 1200-metre Darby Munro Stakes. The next racing day on schedule is the AAMI Golden Slipper Day which will happen on the 2nd of April and it features nine Group status races. Five of the nine races are Group 1 races while three are Group 3 races. The only Group 2 race on the day is the 2000-metre Myer Tulloch Stakes which is a set weights race for three-year-old colts and geldings and it has a $175,000 prize pool.

The Group 3 races that are held during the AAMI Golden Slipper Day are the 1100-metre Sebring Stakes, the 2000-metre Queen’s Cup and the 1400-metre Schweppervesence. The Sebring Stakes and the Queen’s Cup are quality handicap races while the Schweppervesence is a handicap race for two-year-olds. The three races have a prize pool of $125,000 each.

Meanwhile, the Group 1 races on AAMI Golden Slipper Day are the 2000-metre Queen of the Turf Stakes, the 1500-metre Queen of the Turf Stakes, the 1500-metre George Ryder Stakes, the 2400-metre the BMW and the 1200-metre AAMI Golden Slipper Stakes. The George Ryder, the Queen of the Turf and the BMW are weight for age races while the Vinery Study and the Golden Slipper are set weights.

The third big day on the Sydney Racing Carnival is the David Jones Australian Derby Day which happens on the 9th of April and it also features nine Group level races. Of the nine races, four are of Group 3 level, two are of Group 2 level and three are of Group 1 level. Of course, the highlight of the race day is the 2400-metre AJC Australian Derby which is a set weights race for races horses of at least three years old and it has a prize purse of $1.5 million with $900,000 going to the winner.

On the other hand, the other Group 1 races on schedule during the Australian Derby Day are the 1200-metre TJ Smith Stakes and the 1400-metre AJC Sires Produce Stakes. The TJ Smith Stakes is a weight for age race with a prize purse of $1 million. Meanwhile the AJC Sires Produce Stakes is a set weights race for two-year-old horses with a prize pool of $500,000. The winner of the TJ Smith Stakes gets $600,000 while the winner of the Sires Produce Stakes takes home $300,000.

The Group 2 races during Australian Derby Day are the 2600-metre Chairman’s Handicap which is a quality handicap race for race horses of at least three years of age and the 1200-metre Sapphire Stakes which is a set weights with penalties race for fillies and mares of at least three years of age. Both races have a prize purse of $175,000 with $105,000 going to the winners.

The Group 3 races on Australian Derby Day are the 2000-metre Adrian Knox Stakes, the 1600-metre Doncaster Prelude, the 1600-metre Carbine Club Stakes and the 1100-metre Kindergarten Stakes. The Adrian Knox and the Doncaster Prelude are quality handicap races but the Adrian Knox is exclusive for fillies. The Adrian Knox has a prize pool of $150,000 while the Doncaster Prelude has a prize pool of $125,000.

Meanwhile, the Carbine Club Stakes is a set weights plus penalties race for three year old horses while the Kindergarten Stakes is a set weights race for two-year old horses. Both races have prize pools of $125,000 with the top finisher each race getting $75,000. For the Kindergarten Stakes, colts and geldings must weigh 56.5 kilograms while the fillies must carry 54.5 kilograms.

Next on schedule is the Doncaster Handicap Day which features three Group 1 races, four Listed races and two Benchmark races. The two benchmark races are the 1200-metre Benchmark 85 Handicap and the 1400-metre Benchmark 95 Handicap. Both races have prize pools of $80,000 with the top winner getting $48,000.

On the other hand, the Listed races include the 2000-metre Japan Racing Association Plate, the 1400-metre South Pacific Classic, the 1200-metre Keith Mackay Quality and the 1600-metre Fernhill Handicap. Only the Keith Mackay Quality is the exclusive race for fillies among these Listed races and they all have prize pools of $100,000 with the winner getting $60,000.

The Group 1 races on Doncaster Handicap Day are the 1100-metre James Boag Galaxy, the 2400-metre AJC Oaks and the 1600-metre Doncaster Mile. The James Boag Galaxy is a handicap race with a price pool of $350,000. Meanwhile, the AJC Oaks is a set weights race for three-year-old fillies and it has a prize pool of $550,000.

The Emirates Doncaster Mile is a handicap race for horse races of at least three years old and it has a prize pool of $2 million with $1.2 million going to the winner. The second, third and fourth place finishers will get $400,000, $200,000 and $100,000. The owner, trainer and jockey of the winning horse will also get trophies worth $9,500, $1,000 and $1,000 respectively.

The final major day of the Sydney Racing Carnival is the Schweppes Sydney Cup Day and it features two Listed races, one Group 3 race, one Group 2 race and four Group 1 races. The Listed races are the 1200-metre Hall Mark Stakes and the 1400-metre HB Carr Stakes. The 2000-metre Frank Packer Plate is the lone Group 3 race while the 1600-metre Emancipation Stakes is the only Group 2 race.

The Group 1 races during Schweppes Sydney Cup Day are the 1400-metre, weight for age All Aged Stakes, the 1600-metre, set weights Champagne Stakes, the 2000-metre, weight for age Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the 3200-metre, handicap Sydney Cup. The Sydney Cup and the Queen Elizabeth has prize pools of $500,000 each while the Champagne and All Aged has prize pools of $400,000 each.
