The Races at Warwick Farm Racecourse
Although the Australian Jockey Club was able to purchase the Warwick Farm Racecourse in 1922, it wasn’t until 1925 that the first horse race here was held. Together with the Royal Randwick Racecourse, they are two of the most prestigious race track in New South Wales. The Warwick Farm Racecourse has a circumference of 1,937 metres and a home straight of 326 metres.
Warwick Farm has sharp turns especially at the 1200-metre mark. Due to the tightness of the race track, it would be hard for trailing horses to catch up with the front runners for they must run very wide in order to come from behind. The Warwick Farm Races also has starting marks for races of 1000 metres, 1100 metres, 1200 metres, 1400 metres, 1600 metres and 2200 metres.
Fifteen horse racing meets are being held at Warwick every year and their most awaited events are included in either their autumn or spring racing carnivals. The only Group 1 race that is held at Warwick Farm is the Chipping Norton Stakes which is held every March. This weight-for-age race has a distance of 1600 metres. In 1992, 2001 and 2008, the race was held at the Randwick Racecourse.
The Chipping Norton Stakes was first held in 1925 and the race was won by Wallace Mortlake. Back then, the race had a distance of ten furlongs or about 2000 metres and it was considered as a principal race. In 1973, the race distance was adjusted to 2100 metres following the introduction of the metric system in Australia and the race during that year was won by Latin Knight.
In 1980, the race was elevated to Group 2 status and the race distance was shortened to its current length of 1600 metres. Embasadora won the race that year. In 1986, and the race was elevated to Group 1 status and was won by Heat of the Moment. Throughout the history of the Chipping Norton Stakes, a lot of thoroughbreds have won this race multiple times.
The most successful race horse in Chipping Norton Stakes history is tie the knot for he won four consecutive Chipping Norton Stakes from 1999 to 2002. The first multiple winner of the Chipping Norton Stakes is Lough Neagh in 1936 and 1937. Next is Katanga that won in 1944 and 1945 while Carbon Copy also achieved the feat in 1949 and 1950. Carioca also won the Chipping Norton Stakes of 1953 and 1955.
Tulloch won the Chipping Norton Stakes of 1958 and 1960 while Apollo Eleven gained victories in 1973 and 1975. Super Impose also won multiple Chipping Norton Stakes via back-to-back fashion in 1991 and 1992. The 2011 Chipping Norton Stakes was won by Danleigh with jockey Hugh Bowman on board. The seven-year-old Danleigh won the race over Centennial Park, Sacred Choice and Maluckyday.
Aside from the Chipping Norton Stakes, the Warwick Farm Racecourse also features great Group 2 and Group 3 races during their autumn racing carnival. The best Group 2 race that is held at Warwick during autumn is the Surround Stakes which is an exclusive race for three-year-old fillies and has a distance of 1400 metres. This set weights race was first held in 1979 and it has a current prize pool of $150,000.
Meanwhile, some of the great Group 3 races at Warwick Farm during autumn are the Kindergarten Stakes and the Liverpool City Cup. The Kindergarten Stakes is exclusively for two-year-old horses and this set weights race has a distance of 1100 metres. On the other hand, the Liverpool City Cup is an open quality race with a distance of 1200 metres.
Though there are no Group 1 races that are held at the Warwick Farm Races during their spring racing carnival, horse racing fans are still treated to great thoroughbred racing action with a handful of Group 2 and Group 3 races on schedule. Some of the Group 2 races held at Warwick every spring are the AJC Challenge Stakes and the Warwick Stakes.
The AJC Challenge Stakes is a weight-for-age race that has a race distance of 1000 metres. Meanwhile, the Warwick Stakes is also a weight-for-age race but with a distance of 1400 metres. The Warwick Stakes was first held in 1923 with Sunburst winning the inaugural race. However, this race has transferred venues from Warwick to Randwick since 2003.
Several thoroughbreds have won the Warwick Stakes more than once. Limerick won three straight from 1927 to 1929 while Johnnie Jason won in 1931 and 1932. Chatham won back-to-back in 1933 and 1934 while San Domenico did the feat in 1950 and 1951. Tarien also won back to back in 1953 and 1954 while Sky High won in 1961 and 1962. Gay Gauntlet also won the Warwick Stakes of 1965 and 1967 while Kingston Town won three straight from 1980 to 1982.
Super Impose won in 1990 and 1991 while Filante took home the Warwick Stakes of 1996 and 1997. Lohnro is the last race horse to win multiple Warwick Stakes when he crossed the finish line first in 2001 and 2003. Meanwhile, the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes has a distance of 1200 meters and is exclusively for three-year-old fillies. This set weights and penalties race was first held in 2004 and the 2007 edition was cancelled due to the equine influenza outbreak.
Also, the Up and Coming Stakes is the counterpart of the Silver Shadow Stakes for colts and geldings. The Up and Coming Stakes is also a set weights and penalties race with a race distance of 1200 metres. The Up and Coming Stakes was also first held in 2004 with Fastnet Rock winning the inaugural race. The prize purse for the Up and Coming Stakes is $125,000.
Aside from the main race track, the Warwick Farm Racecourse also has three training tracks, two are grass training tracks while the other is a sand training track. You can reach the Warwick Farm Racecourse by train via the Warwick Farm Station that will be crossed by the Cumberland, Bankstown, Inner West and South lines.
You can also arrive at Warwick Farm by bus via the shuttle buses at the Warwick Farm train station or by car via the Hume Highway or the South Western Motorway. The Warwick Farm Racecourse is about 30 kilometres from the central business district of Sydney.

Meanwhile, this horse racing tracks is also home to the 1100-metre, Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes for two-year-old horses.
The race scene in Warwick Farm is also blossoming during Spring due to events such as the 1000-metre, Group 2 AJC Challenge Stakes and the 1400-metre, Group 2 Warwick Stakes. The Warwick Farm race track also plays host to August events such as the 1200-metre, Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes for three-year-old fillies and the 1200-metre, Group 3 Up and Coming Stakes for three-year-old geldings and colts.
Also a part of the Warwick horse racing calendar are the 1200-metre listed open Show County Quality Handicap and the 1400-metre listed open Toy Show Quality Handicap. These roses have been widely watched and bet by horse racing fans in New South Wales and in Australia.
When travelling by train to the Warwick Farm Racecourse, the nearest station on the South, Bankstown, Cumberland and Inner West lines is Warwick Farm Station. From there, you can walk for a kilometer or ride the shuttle bus to arrive at the racing facility.
When you are going by car, it is located next to the Hume Highway in Warwick Farm and is around 30 kilometres away from the central district of Sydney. You may also arrive there through the South Western Motorway. Once you are at the Warwick Farm racecourse, you can park at the racetrack’s Ledger Lawn.
