About the Warrnambool Races
The Warrnambool Racecourse is maintained by the Warrnambool Racing Club and is located on the eastern outskirts of Warrnambool. This horse racing track is home to the Flying Horse Bar and Brewery Grand Annual Steeple Chase, the Listed Luxbet Warrnambool Cup and the May Racing Carnival. Horse racing in Warrnambool started in 1858.
In 2005, the May Racing Carnival is listed as a Hallmark Event by the state government of Victoria and it is the only regional horse racing meet that has ever been listed as such in Australia. Because of this listing, the May Racing Carnival is now at par with other key events in Victoria such as the Bells Beach Rip Curl Pro, the Australian Grand Prix and the AFL Grand Finals.
Two years after that, the Warrnambool Racing Club had its 160th anniversary and a year after that, the club celebrated its 150th anniversary at its current home at Grafton Road. Due to its centuries-old tradition, Warrnambool horse racing is a major part of the community’s history, culture and heritage.
The Warnambool horse racing turf has a circumference of 2,100 metres and a straight of 350 metres. It also features an off-course track which joins the set track for steeplechases. Steeplechases that are staged here are5, 500 metres and 33 fences. These figures are the most in any race in the world. It also has sweeping turns and a home straight of 260 metres.
The horse racing circuit also has Brierly and Granter paddocks that form a portion of the steeplechase course. This unique set-up brought international fame to the steeplechase races in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool Racing Club has 20 horse racing meets every year and the most popular of which are the May Carnival which attracts 35,000 people, the Warrnambool Cup and the Grand Annual Steeplechase.
Aside from the 20 horse racing meets that are staged in Warrnambool every year, the Warrnambool Racing Clubs also provides hospitality, accommodation and transport and retail operators. These can assists horse racing fans or visitors through the summer vacation and whale watching at the area.
Membership benefits to the Warrnambool Racing Club includes admission to all race days at the Warrnambool racecourse, reserved seated and complimentary car parking, voting rights at WRC meetings, invitation to members only events, access to the members only dining area and reserved seating at the racecourse grandstand, reciprocal right to other race clubs within the state and discounts on the usage of rooms or function hall for personal reasons.
