About The Wangarratta Races

The Wangaratta Racecourse is the home turf of the Wangaratta Turf Club and it is located approximately 235 kilometres from Melbourne through the Hume Highway. At Wangaratta, it is located at Osboldstone Road. Horse racing in Wangaratta began the northern part of the city in 1845 and the club moved to its current location in 1855.

From 1923-2003, the St. Patrick’s Wangaratta Racing Club also used this turf for their charity meetings. It was also here where the first all grey horse race in Victoria was held. The group also conducted their first Sunday meeting at the confines of this horse racing facility.

In 1985, the Wangaratta Turf Club became one of the first horse racing country clubs in Victoria that was invited to race on Melboune Cup Day. This proved to be the turning point for the club to become one of the more popular horse racing clubs in Victoria.

IASBETThe layout of the Wangaratta Racecourse is technically the same with that of the Flemington Racecourse. It has a circumference of 1750 metres and it has two chutes. One of these chutes is used for 1600-metre races while the other is reserved for races from 1000 to 1170 metres. All races can have a maximum of 14 competitors and the track is 20 metres wide all throughout.

The grass of the Wangaratta Racecourse is kikuya that is planted on a sandy loam soil that is oversown with rye grass. Also, the drainage system of the race turf features an automatic watering system. This undulating track also drops by 14 feet from the 1000 metre mark and rises three meters from the 600 metre mark to the winning post.

Aside from the horse racing track, the Wangaratta horse racing complex features one grass training track, one sand training track. Years ago, other racing programs such as hurdle races, water jump steeplechases and pony races were staged here.

The Wangaratta Turf Club hosts ten race meetings at this track every year and the most notable of which is the Wangaratta Cup. The inaugural Wangaratta Cup was held in 1904 when it was still called a plate. Since then, it has been staged annually every April.

Throughout the history of the Wangaratta Cup, only two horses have won the race twice. The first horse to do so was Sarakos in 1935 and 1936 while the second is Here’s Cheers who took it all in 1971 and 1972.
Membership to the Wangaratta is worth an annual fee of $70 for adults and $40 for the Colts and Fillies membership which is reserved for members aged 35 and below. Members will get a membership card which serves as their pass for all ten races in Wangaratta.

They would also gain access to the member’s only bar and lounge, invitations to members only events, discounts on marquee packages include the use of the Wangaratta Turf Club facilities for private functions and reciprocal membership rights to the horse racing clubs of Wodonga, Benalla, Towong, Murrumbidgee and Mooney Valley.
