The Victoria Park Races:
The Victoria Park Races used to be the home turf of the South Australian Jockey Club until 2008 when the club was denied by the Adelaide City Council of the construction of a $55 million grandstand. Without the grandstand, race meetings at Victoria Park would translate into a $1.5 million debt. Thus, the South Australian Jockey Club transferred their operation to the Morphettville Racecourse.
In 2008, the Adelaide City Council instead announced that they will convert Victoria Park into a people’s park and they have constructed wetlands, community sporting facilities, pedestrian tracks and temporary motorsport facilities. Despite the inactivity of Victoria Park as a horse racing track, it doesn’t eliminate the rich history that this race track has.
The South Australia Jockey Club was formed in 1856 and the Victoria Park Racecourse is their first home. In 1880, the club built Victoria Park’s grandstand and it became one of the best race courses in South Australia. Victoria Park has an inner and an outer race course and both tracks resemble an oval. The inner track has a circumference of 1960 metres and a straight of 428 metres.
Meanwhile, the outer race course has a circumference of 2360 metres and a home straight of 601 metres. This is the longest home straight in any horse racing track in Australia. The inner track uses parts of the outer track except for the curve coming into the home straight. Races at Victoria Park were staged counter-clockwise. Victoria Park also has two starting chutes which are both part of the outer course.
As part of the rehabilitation project of the Adelaide City Council for the Victoria Park Racecourse, they have demolished a 1950s grandstand and a large brick wall near the utility buildings. Instead, they chose to rehabilitate a 1880s grandstand to provide seating for the park visitors. At present, there are no racing carnivals or any horse races being held at the Victoria Park Racecourse.
