Townsville Racecourse
Located at North Queensland, the Townsville Racecourse is about a thousand miles away from Brisbane. Horse racing in what is known as Cleveland Park started in August 15-17, 1866 and the events were governed by the Flinders and Burdenham Race Club. The highlight event of the early race meets at Townsville is the weight-for-age Town Plate which has a race distance of three miles.
The Townsville Turf Club was established in 1874 and it remains to be the governing body of the horse races in Townsville in the race course known as Cluden Park. The first race meeting of the Townsville Turf Club was held in 1882 and the first Townsville Cup was conducted in 1884. Aside from the race track itself, Cluden Park has beautiful gardens surrounding the racing facility.
The Townsville Racecourse has a circumference of 1680 metres and a home straight of 310 metres. Races here are staged clockwise. The race track also features five starting chutes which are used for horse races of various distances. The track is downhill from the 1000-metre chute and the track has sweeping turns which are ideal for overtaking lead horses.
One starting chute is devoted to 1000-metre races while another chute is for 1200-metre races. The starting area for 1300-metre races in Townsville is located at the middle of the starting chutes for 1200 metres and 1400 metres. Another racing chute is for 1600-metre races while one chute is shared by 2000-metre races and 2200-metre races.
All races at the Townsville Racecourse are staged clockwise. In 1994, the race course was granted TAB status and it has become one of the biggest horse racing courses in Northern Queensland. The gardens at the Townsville Racecourse make it an ideal location for non-racing events and functions like weddings, corporate events and parties.
The Townsville Races hosts about 30 racing meets annually with most months featuring at least two race meets. The most prestigious race held at the Townsville Racecourse is the Townsville Cup which is held every July and attracts about 12,000 racing fans. The Townsville Cup is part of the Townsville Winter Racing Carnival and it has several non-racing activities in store as well.
Aside from the race action itself, Townsville Cup Day features the Fashions on the Field competition and the Ladies Race Day. The Townsville Cup has a race distance of 1960 metres and it experienced a dead heat when Sooth Sayer and Stage Shaker finished to a dead heat. Earlier that day, another race finished in a dead heat.
Standard membership for the Townsville Racecourse is worth $137.50 while country membership costs $82.50. Individuals under 25 who would like to become a member of the club will have to pay $68.75. Members can enjoy free admission for every race day, access to the member’s grandstand or cocktail lodge, free monthly newsletter, reciprocal rights and voting rights during the Annual General Meeting.
The Townsville Racecourse can be reached by bus through the 2A or 2C Sunbus trips that will take you to the Wulguru. From there, the Townsville Racecourse is just a short walk away. You may also arrive at Townsville by car and it is just 16 minutes to the south of the city. You can reach Townsville by driving along the Flinders Highway.
