The Sunshine Coast Races

Sunshine Coast Racecourse
The first race meet at the Sunshine Coast Racecourse was held in July 1985 and it has been a staple attraction in this area which is located 50 minutes north of Brisbane. All races that are staged here are governed by the Sunshine Coast Turf Club and they offer horse races every Sunday and night races on Fridays. To illuminate the track, Sunshine Coast boasts of 960 lights that are perched in 40 light towers.
The Sunshine Coast Races features three race tracks: a grass track, a cushion track and the main track. The cushion track is made of synthetic material and it is worth $6 million. Sunshine Coast is the only racecourse in Australia that has this kind of synthetic track. Meanwhile, the main race course has a circumference of 1967 metres and a straight of 400 meters.
The Sunshine Coast Racecourse has starting areas for races of 1000 metres, 1100 metres, 1200 metres, 1300 metres, 1400 metres, 1600 metres, 1800 metres and 2400 metres. The Sunshine Coast racecourse is oblong in shape and it has four starting chutes for various race distances.
With a practically long home straight, lagging horses will have a chance to catch up. Also, the sweeping turns of Sunshine Coast makes it ideal for come-from-behind victories. The Sunshine Coast Racecourse is exactly located at Meridian Plains, Queensland and its most popular attraction is the Caloundra Cup Carnival which falls on July.
The Caloundra Cup Carnival stretches for two days and one of its major attractions is the 2400-metre Caloundra Cup which has a $200,000 prize pool. Aside from the Caloundra Cup, Sunshine Coast also hosts the 1400-metre Glasshouse Handicap which has a $175,000 prize pool and the $100,000 Sunshine Coast Guineas which has a race distance of 1600 metres.
Aside from the Caloundra Cup Day, Sunshine Coast also has the Ladies Oaks Day which is the most prestigious ladies day in the Sunshine Coast. They also have the Melbourne Cup Day every November to celebrate the most prestigious race in Australian horse racing.
You may reach the Sunshine Coast Racecourse by train via the Landsborough Station on the Caboolture line. However, this station is still 14 kilometres away from the racecourse. Visiting Sunshine Coast by bus would be better because Sunbus number 603 will bring you directly to the racecourse. You can also reach the racecourse by car via the Bruce Highway before exiting at Caloundra Road.
