Strathalbyn Racecourse
The Strathalbyn Racecourse is operated by the Strathalbyn Racing Club and it is the largest provincial race course in South Australia. Strathalbyn can be found about 60 kilometres away from Adelaide and a fifty-minute drive through the Dry Plains Road can take you to this racecourse. Located right at the Fleurieu Peninsula, Strathalbyn has a circumference of 1690 metres and a home straight of 340 metres.
This well-irrigated grass race course poses some challenges to thoroughbreds especially the hill on the home turn before going to the home straight. Though harness racing is a more famous attraction here, thoroughbred horse races also have a strong fan base due to the challenging nature of the race track. As added attraction, you can marvel at the well-maintained lawns and gardens that surround Strathalbyn as well.
The Strathalbyn Racecourse opened in 1922 and it has a circumference of 1690 metres. It also has a home straight of 340 metres and three starting chutes for races of various distances. Aside from the race track, the racing complex has an inner training track and a sand track for galloping. The racing complex is well-maintained due to the automatic irrigation system that Strathalbyn has.
All races at the Strathalbyn Races are staged counter-clockwise. The Strathalbyn Racecourse usually conducts 16 race meets that are held in November, January, April or May. The most prestigious race days on the Strathalbyn Racecourse calendar are the Langhorne Creek Vignerons Day and the Betfair Strathalbyn Cup Day.
Due to the breath-taking view at the Strathalbyn Racecourse, other non-racing events such as birthdays, weddings and conferences can also be held here. The Strathalbyn Racecourse is accessible by car via a 40-minute drive from Adelaide through the Dry Plains Road.
