About Sale Races
The Sale Turf Club was established n 1842 and it has an unmatched history. It is regarded as a high class venue of provincial racing that has been the home of famous race horses such as Makybe Diva and Sky Heights. Due to the club’s Leadership 2000 initiative, this racing facility has been geared for further development.
The horse races in the cathedral city of Sale are won and lost at the Greenwattle Racecourse that is practically as old as the Sale Turf Club. The first race in the course was recorded in 1842. That two-horse race was between the thoroughbreds of two district pioneers. In 1860, the Sale Turf Club’s name was officially established.
The Greenwattle Racecourse of Sale is about two hours and 25 minutes away from Melbourne. The track has a circumference of 2040 metres while it has a straight of 353 meters. Races that are staged here have distances from 1,000 to 3,200 metres and there can be a maximum of 16 race horses per race. However, a 1,400 race in this course can only accommodate 14 horses.
The track also has varying distances for first turns. The first turn of a 1000-metre race is at about the 600 meter mark while a 1200-metre race will have its first turn at the 700-metre mark. Meanwhile, a 1400-metre and a 2200-metre race will turn first at the 300-metre mark while a race of 1500 metres will have turn one at the 400-metre mark. A 1600-metre race will make a turn at the 500-metre mark while a 1700-metre race will turn at the 600-metre mark.
