About Newcastle Races

Horse racing in Newcastle started during the middle part of the 19th century. However, these were usually one-and-done races and there was no organization that oversees the races. It wasn’t until 1901 when horse racing enthusiasts met to form the Newcastle Jockey Club in 1901. Since then, it has become one of the most progressive horse racing clubs in Australia.

Since it is near the Hunter Valley area, it has also become of the best thoroughbred training centres in the country with many past and present champions honing their skills or starting their careers at the Newcastle horse racing turf which is now known as Beautiful Broadmeadow.

50freejoin_racing_195x195The Newcastle horse racing track is a flat track which has a circumference of 2000 metres and a straight distance of 415 metres. This track works to the advantage of horses that are trained for endurance and not for sprints. Races that are staged in Beautiful Broadmeadow are run clockwise. This horse racing track hosts 26 race meets a year that are held every Saturday.

Some of its famous events are the Autumn and Spring Carnivals and the Sunday Westpac Rescue Helicopter Raceday in November. Aside from these events, the biggest racing day in the Newcastle racecourse is the Boxing Day Races which attracts 16,000 patrons. Due to the sheer number of spectators, it is regarded as the biggest party in Newcastle.

However, the most prestigious race in Beautiful Broadmeadow is the Newcastle Cup which is a 2300-metre, Group 3 open handicap horse race that is held annually during the midweek of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. Other races that are staged in Newcastle during the spring racing festival are the Cameron Handicap and the Spring Stakes which are also Group 3 races.

Winners and top competitors of the Newcastle Cup usually qualify and perform well in following events such as the 2400-metre, Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality HCP and the 2400-metre, Group 1 The Metropolitan. In 2009, the Newcastle Gold Cup had a prize pool of $185,000 and a big portion of it was won by race winner Streetfighter. Lodge the Deeds and Enzedex Eagle finished second and third respectively.

During racing days, the function halls of the Newcastle horse racing facility cater to patrons. However, these halls can also be used for various events such as birthdays, wedding receptions, seminars, conferences and many more.

The Newcastle Jockey Club is also open for membership. Being a full member is worth $132 annually and they can buy one guest badge for $66. Meanwhile, a five-year membership is worth $930. Once a member, you will gain full access to the member lounge and various discounts and complimentary perks from the club.
