The Mount Gambier Races:

Mount Gambier is a natural wonder due to its craters, lakes, limestone and underground waterways. That being said, the Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse is also a beauty to behold. Located right at Jubilee Highway East, Casterton Road and Attiwill Road, this race course is just ten kilometres away from the central business district of Mount Gambier which is in the middle of Adelaide and Melbourne.

Horse racing in Mount Gambier dates back to 1879 when the first Winter Steeplechase was held near the town centre. After a couple of years, the Mount Gambier Racing Club was formed and the club conducted its first steeplechase during the opening of the Glenburnie Racecourse in July 4, 1883. This inaugural event was attended by about 3500 patrons.

Since then, the Mount Gambier Racing Club has been the governing club for all horse races in the town and the Glenburnie Racecourse has been their home. Due to the rich history of Glenburnie, they have an area that is devoted to the legends that graced Mount Gambier horse racing. A Legends Room was also created and four members were inaugurated as the first Hall of Famers.

The Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse is a grass track with a circumference of 1850 metres and a home straight of 400 metres. The race track is actually composed of three tracks: the course proper, the steeplechase course and the sand track. The sand track is often used for practices while the steeplechase course has a circumference of 1600 metres.

Meanwhile, the horse racing course has a circumference of 1850 metres and it has starting chutes for 900 metres, 1550 metres, 1800 metres and 2400 metres. The Glenburnie Racecourse in Mount Gambier is known for its dog leg path which leads to the home straight. The Mount Gambier Cup Carnival is the most prestigious event in the Mount Gambier racing calendar while the Mount Gambier Gold Cup is the most prestigious race. The Gold Cup is held every May.

Regular races at Mount Gambier are often held during the last week of the month either on Thursdays or Fridays.  Meanwhile, the 2011 Mount Gambier Gold Cup stretches from the 8th until the 22nd of May and it features various racing and non-racing events such as barrier trials, the Breakfast with the Stars, a cocktail party, the Calcutta event, the Gold Cup race day and the Pink Ladies Day.

Dean Saxon is the only local licensed trainer for the 2010-2011 racing season at Mount Gambier while 14 trainers have a local permit to train for the season. There are also 12 local owners/trainers registered with Mount Gambier while five local Class A jockeys call Mount Gambier home. One apprentice jockey, Melissa Walters, is also registered while Todd’s Photographics is Glenburnie’s official race day photographer.
