About the Kilmore Races

Horse racing in Kilmore dates back to 1850 when horse races were stages at rolling meadows in an out and back design between two points. When the track moved to its present site in 1865, the character of that racecourse was maintained. Meanwhile, the Kilmore Racing Club was established in 1900 and it oversees and facilitates horse races in the Kilmore racecourse.

The Kilmore horse racing calendar has 49 total races. Thirteen of which are Thoroughbred races while the rest are Harness races. All of Kilmore’s races are full TAB racedays which gives its races a premiere level as compared to that of other race clubs. Also, the complex of the Kilmore Racing Club brings it a notch above its country club counterparts.

The 1735-metre Kilmore racecourse became known due to its uphill run and tough layout. To add to the challenge, the course’s home straight that is 320 metres long goes up four metres to test the endurance of both horse and jockey. Due to this unique layout, trainers and jockeys plot unique strategies for this course alone. Also, one race in the 20-metre wide turf can only have as much as 15 runners.

The main event at this horse racing turf is the annual Kilmore Cup which is held every February. This 1600-metre test of racing prowess has been won by great trainers, horses and jockeys. Aside from this event, Kilmore has other feature races which include the Kilmore Pacing Cup, the Girls Day Out, the Dual Code Day, the Kilmore Turf Cup, the Xmas Beach Party and the Vin Knight Memorial.

The Kilmore racing facility also hosts the Regional Cups Family Day in mid-October and the Spring Race Day in early November. Aside from top-notch Australian horse racing action, Kilmore also offers other forms of entertainment to its members like live bands, top class ticket shows, bingo, poker, morning melodies and a lot more.
