Horse racing at Ipswich started when the Ipswich Turf Club Incorporated held its first race at Ipswich in 1848. In 1859, the club held its first official race day in Queensland and it was renamed as the Ipswich Amateur Turf Club 21 years after. In 1988, the club’s name was once again changed to the Ipswich Turf Club and the Ipswich Racecourse has been a staple attraction in Bundamba.
Ipswich hosts 46 race meetings yearly and it is most busy during June. The Ipswich racecourse can be found about 32 kilometres away from Brisbane. The race track has a circumference of 1746 metres and a home straight of 300 metres. The track has five starting chutes for various race distances and it is the best thoroughbred racing course in Queensland.
The most prestigious race in the Ipswich Racecourse calendar is the Ipswich Cup which is held every June and has a race distance of 2150 metres. Aside from the race itself, Ipswich Cup Day also includes a Fashion on the Field competitions. The Ipswich Turf Club estimates that about 20,000 horse racing fans, punters and enthusiasts participate in the Ipswich Cup.
