Horse racing at the Gold Coast Racecourse started in 1946 and it serves as an alternative to the surfing attractions in the area. In fact, the race course is just five minutes away from the Surfer’s Paradise and it is about 80 minutes away to the south of the main urban area of Brisbane. Aside from the beautiful beaches that it presents, Gold Coast has horse racing action that it can boast of as well.
The Gold Coast Races has a circumference of 1885 metres and a home straight of 400 metres. The track caters to races with distances from 900 to 3200 metres that starts on various starting chutes. Every year, the Gold Coast Turf Club conducts about 60 race meetings including the Magic Millions Racing Carnival which is held every January.
Aside from horse racing action, the Magic Millions Racing Carnival also features fashion competitions, luncheons, yearling sales and many others. The main attraction of the Gold Coast Magic Millions Festival is the Magic Millions Race Day which is often held on either the second or third Saturday of January. This race day gives out a total of $4.3 million worth of prize money that are divided to nine horse races.
The highlight races of the Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day are the Magic Millions Guineas for three-year-old horses and the Magic Millions Classic for two-year-old horses. The Magic Millions Three-Year-Old Guineas is a 1400-metre race which has a $1 million prize pool while the Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic is a 1200-metre race with a prize purse of $2 million.
Aside from these races, the Magic Millions Race Day features other races such as the 1200-metre Magic Millions Maiden Plate with a prize pool of $82,000 and the 1300-metre Magic Millions Fillies and Mares Handicap. They also have the 1800-metre Magic Millions Stayers Cup with a $170,000 prize purse and the 1000-metre Magic Millions Sprint with a $176,000 prize pool.
The race day also features, the 1400-metre, $328,000 Magic Millions Cup, the 1400-metre Magic Millions Country Cup and the 1200-metre Magic Millions Class 6 Plate. The Country Cup and the Class 6 Plate has identical prize purses of $82,000. Aside from the Magic Millions Race Day, the Gold Coast Racecourse also features group-level races.
Every May, Gold Coast hosts the Prime Minister’s Cup which is the second biggest race day on their calendar. This race day features two group-level races: the 1800-metre, Group 2 Hollindale Stakes and the 1200-metre, Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas.
You may reach the Gold Coast Racecourse by train via the Gold Coast Line to Helensvale Station and then ride a bus to the race course. You may also arrive by bus via the courtesy buses that travel from Tweed to the Gold Coast Racecourse. You may also travel by car via an 80-minute drive from the central business district of Brisbane through the Pacific Motorway. Gold Coast is two kilometres away from the centre of Surfer’s Paradise.
