About the Geelong Races
Horse racing in Geelong started with a three-race event on May 1, 1841 at Corio. The first race among the three was a two-horse race which was won by Juliet that was steered to victory by its owner T. Wright. On February 4, 1843, another horse racing meet was held at the then-newly constructed Fyansford Inn three miles to the west of Geelong.
In order to stage yearly horse racing meetings, the Geelong Racing Committee conducted an initial meeting on October 5, 1843 in an area known as Airey’s Flat. However, the first official meeting took place on February 29 and March 1, 1844 after the horse racing course that was 1.5 miles and 300 yards long was reconstructed.
Aside from the Fyansford meeting, other meetings were conducted in Belmont, Birregura, Leigh Road, Moria, Queenscliff and Drysdale to name a few. Due to these meeting, a racecourse was established in Portarlington can still be seen today. Also, a 727-acre site near the Barwon River became the Marshalltown horse racing course but yearly winter races were scratched from the schedule due to flooding.
In 1907, the main racecourse of the Geelong Racing Club was transferred to its present location on Breakwater Road and the initial meeting on this course was staged in 1908 by the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Committee. Since then, the facility was improved until the Geelong Racing Club had their first ever meeting in the course on December 12, 1908.
Nowadays, the Geelong Racing Club is as solid as ever as it hosts about 35 race meetings in a year. To cater to any type of weather, the GRC installed a synthetic track called Thoroughtrack by mid-2000. This course was built inside the grass turf and is used when other horse racing tracks will experience rain.
Meanwhile, it is said that the horse racing course of Geelong is laid out so that every horse will have an equal shot at winning. It has a circumference of 2043 metres while its straight is at 400 metres. The most prestigious race conducted here is the 2400-metre Geelong Cup which serves as a qualifier for the Melbourne Cup.
The Geelong Racing Club also offers different modes of membership from Full Membership, Senior Membership, Colts and Fillies Membership, Single Membership and Nomination Fee. Membership fees are as low as $25.00 for the Nomination Fee and as high as $120.00 for the Full Membership.
