About the Echuca Races
During the early days, trains from other towns pass by Echuca. Due to the easy access to the horse races in Echuca, the popularity of horse racing in Echuca picked up. Because of which the Echuca Race Club was then formed in 1864. Due to the steady flow of people, rail sidings were built to the racecourse so that the trains can pass by with ease.
However, horse racing in this town which is located about 206 kilometres from Melbourne decreased in popularity at the time between the two World Wars. Horse racing in Echuca has picked up over the years though and more enthusiasts have gotten notice about the horse racing events in this turf.
The Echuca horse racing track has a circumference of 1,811 metres and a straight of 353 metres. The width of the track up to the 400 metre mark is 18 metres while it widens to 33 metres at the straight. Since its soil is sand, the Echuca horse racing track quickly dries up. Because of which, this track is well-irrigated throughout the racing calendar.
For its races, the Echuca racecourse can hold up to 14 thoroughbreds per race. However, its 1600-metre race is appropriate for ten horses only. The Echuca Racing Club conducts eleven TAB horse racing events per year and the most prestigious of which is the Echuca Cup Carnival which is held on a Saturday and Sunday in early March.
Membership to the Echuca Racing Club costs $60 while young members can be part of the Echuca Racing Club for $30. This membership fee includes reserved parking for members, access to the members-only bar, and members-only grandstand seats and post-race area.
