The Races at Doomben Racecourse
Compared to other Australian horse racing racecourses, the Doomben Racecourse is a relatively new for it was built in 1933. Aside from the beautiful race track, the Doomben Race Track is a sight to behold due to the gardens that surround the racing complex. This unique feature gives Doomben the name “Garden Racecourse”.
The Doomben Racecourse has a circumference of 1715 metres and a home straight of 350 metres. The track has light turns and three starting chutes from the 1350 metre, 1615 metre and 2200 metre marks. The Doomben Racecourse is right-handed and races here are governed by the Brisbane Racing Club. Doomben Races hosts about 46 horse racing meets yearly and 24 of those happen on Saturdays.
The Doomben Races hosts three Group 1 racing events and all of them happen in May. These Group 1 events are the BTC Cup, the Doomben Cup and the Doomben 10,000. The Doomben 10,000 is a sprint race that is contested over 1350 metres and was first held in 1933 with Wallen winning the initial race. The race originally had a distance of six furlongs which is approximately 1200 metres. Also, the race was originally known as the T.M Ahearn Memorial. The current prize purse for the Doomben 10,000 is $650,000.
Given the short distance of this weight-for-age open race, the lighter horses often have the advantage for they can use their speed to win the race. It is hard to bounce back from mistakes since the course is short and the race can be over in about 80 seconds. Thus, a strong kick from the barrier gates is needed by competing horse races to win the race.
The 1350-metre course of the Doomben 10,000 starts in the chute before the first turn. Early leaders will usually have an advantage but given the speed of the competing race horses, it is possible to come from behind and snatch a victory. To prepare for this race, competitors usually participate in the Group 1 BTC Cup to get a feel of the race distance and the track conditions of the Doomben Racecourse.
Meanwhile, the Doomben Cup is a weight-for-age race that has a distance of 2,020 metres. Thoroughbreds of at least three years old can participate in this race which has a prize purse of $505,500. The Doomben Cup was first held in 1933 and the inaugural edition was won by Pentheus. Back then, the race had a distance of ten furlongs or about 2000 metres.
In 1938, the race distance was adjusted to eleven furlongs or about 2200 metres. In 1989, the distance of the race is 2160 metres while in 1990, the race distance was adjusted to its current length of 2020 metres and the 1990 Doomben Cup was won by Eye of the Sky. Throughout the history of the Doomben Cup, Rough Habit is the most successful thoroughbred for winning three straight from 1991 to 1993.
Aside from Rough Habit, only Earlwood has won multiple Doomben Cups when he won back to back in 1959 and 1960. The best tune-up race for the Doomben Cup is the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes which has a race distance of 1800 metres. The 2010 Doomben Cup was won by the 59-kilogram Metal Bender with jockey Kerrin McEvoy on board.

It is a relatively young race for it was first held in 1983 with Strawberry Road winning the first race. The prize purse of the BTC Cup is $403,000 and the lighter and faster horses always have an advantage for this race. Buck’s Pride has won multiple BTC Cups when he won back-to-back in 1993 and 1994 while Falvelon has won the BTC Cup in 2000 and 2003.
From 1983 to 1986, the race was classified as a Group 3 race and during this time, Strawberry Road, Mr. Illusion, Sports Ruler and Goldorme won the race. In 1987, the race was elevated to Group 2 classification and it would stay that way in 2005. From 1987 to 1989, the BTC Cup was won by Broad Reach, Cool Report, High Regard.
From 1990 the 2005, the BTC Cup was on by Gypsy Rogue, St. Jude, Barossa Boy, Buck’s Pride (twice), Seawinne, Chief de Beers, Accomplice, General Nediym, Staging, Falvelon, Fritz, Lord Essex, Falvelon, Thorn Park and Spark of Life in that order.
