About the Caulfield Races
The Caulfield and Sandown horse racing courses is now under the management of the Melbourne Racing Club. The Melbourne Racing Club was formerly known as the Victoria Amateur Turf Club. During a VATC meeting in 1875, the attendees of the meeting discussed the establishment of a racing club that will provide competing opportunities for the increasing number of amateur riders.
The meeting was a success and the VATC soon searched for a permanent place in Melbourne and they have set their eyes on the Caulfield racecourse. However, this track was then crudely fashioned due to the sand hills, heath and snake-infested swamps near it.
Prior to the VATC purchase of the Caulfield horse racing track, it was used sparingly and was almost lost for it will be turned into a cemetery. However, the officials of the VATC which later on became the Melbourne Racing Club worked hard to make the Caulfield racecourse into one of the most prestigious horse racing tracks in Australia.
In August 5, 1876, the VATC conducted its first horse racing meet at Caulfield and its race card was copied from the initial meets at the Ballarat racecourse. Bit by bit, they phased out amateur events and the inaugurated the Caulfield Cup into the autumn horse racing meets by 1879.
Two years after, the club introduced the Caulfield Guineas for three-year-old horses while the Caulfield Cup was brought to the spring racing schedule. During the Second World War, the Caulfield racecourse was used by the Army as a clearing house for recruits who went through a medical examination before being certified as fit for battle.
In 1944, the Caulfield racecourse was returned to the VATC’s control and races resumes in August of the same year. In 1961, the off-course totalisator was introduced and two years after, the original Melbourne Racing Club joined the VATC.
With its rich history and exciting races, it is no wonder that the Caulfield racecourse is one of the most prestigious horse racing tracks in Australia. This is the reason why the Melbourne Racing Club and the Victorian government spent money in improving the racecourse in 2000.
The Caulfield horse racing turf has a circumference of 2,080 and a straight of 367 metres. It resembles the shape of a triangle and it has sweeping long corners. Also, the track has an uphill part along the back of the course at the start of 1,400-metre races. Due to its sharp corners and short straight, it would be hard for horses to pull off a come-from behind victory.
In one racing year, the Melbourne Racing Club stages 60 horse races with Caulfield being its top-notch track. The Caulfield horse racing turf features 11 Group 1 races including the Caulfield Guineas, the CF Orr Stakes, The Underwood Stakes, the Thousand Guineas, the Yalumba Stakes and the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. However, Caulfield’s most prestigious race is the Caulfield Cup.
Inaugurated in 1879, this 2400-metre race is one of the richest horse races in the world with a prize pool of $2.5 million in 2009. This race is open to thoroughbreds which are three-years-old and up and this race serves as a qualifying race for the Melbourne Cup.
Last year, jockey Brad Rawiller and Viewed won the Caulfield Cup with a time of 2:29.70. Viewed was trained by Bart Cummings and owned by Dato Tan Chin Nam. Viewed has also won the 2008 Melbourne Cup. The Caulfield racecourse also features the Blue Diamond for two-year olds. This race is the number two horse race for juveniles in the Australian horse racing scene.
