About the Canterbury Races:
The Canterbury Race Track is located about 15 minutes southwest of the central city area of Sydney. It is the major racing venue in Sydney during the midweek and is home to some night horse racing. It also features an air-conditioned betting area and is home to the Sydney Turf Club.
The Sydney Turf Club was established in 1943 via the Sydney Turf Club Act which was passed by the parliament of New South Wales. The said act was drafted for 40 years and it states that the club can stage at least 60 races a year. The act also gave the club full responsibility for the management of the Rosehill Gardens and the Canterbury Park. Currently, the Sydney Turf Club is the youngest club among the principal race clubs in Australia.
The Canterbury Park has a circumference of 1,567 meters and a straight of 308 meters. These dimensions favor horses that can pace the races in this track which are all ran clockwise. Races of various distances have been staged here but the most regular race distances are the 1000-meter, the 1100-meter, the 1200-meter, the 1290-meter, the 1550-meter, the 1900-meter, the 2800-meter and the 3400-meter races.
Aside from hosting Sydney’s only night races from October to February, the Canterbury race track also boasts of its midweek races that are flocked by horse racing fans from all over Australia. Another good characteristic about this track is its intimacy. Horse racing patrons can really feel the stomp of the horses’ feet on its turf which is also proclaimed as the best racing surface in New South Wales.
As for its night races, floodlights dominate the Canterbury Park skyline to illuminate every part of the track. This can alter a horse’s biometric in terms of performance which makes night races very challenging. Bookmakers might have a hard time calling these races but these calls for exciting runs at Canterbury Park. There are seven night races per race day which are held at 30-minute intervals from 6:15 to 9:45 P.M.
