About the Benalla Races

Being regarded as one of the most picturesque horse racing courses in Victoria, the Benalla horse racing track has the trademark charm and ambience that cannot be copied by other horse racing tracks. This horse racing facility is managed by the Benalla Racing Club which was established in 1860.

This beautiful location features shady elm trees which serve as a background to the course. Under these trees, families can have a picnic while enjoy a day of fun-filled horse races. The Benalla horse racing facility also has a new playground wherein kids can spend their play time.

As for its race track, it has a circumference of 1879 metres and races here are staged counter-clockwise. It is a spacious race track which has two sweeping turns and two straights and it contains clay loam soil. The track is also well-irrigated and well grassed. This race track caters to races of 1,100 metres, 1,200 metres, 1,400 metres, 1,600 metres, 1,700 metres, 2,000 metres, 2,100 metres, 2,155 metres, 2,300 metres and 3,000-metre steeplechase races.

The Benalla horse racing course is home to eleven races per year and its highlight race is the Benalla Gold Cup which is held on the first Sunday of October. In 2009, this 2046-metre race was won by Stormhill with Ulysees and Majestical clocking in at second and third respectively. Stormhill was steered to victory by jockey Brad Rawiller who won his second Benalla Gold Cup and trainer Clinton McDonald.

Aside from the horse race itself, the $100,000 Benalla Gold Cup also has a fashion contests for horse racing patrons of different genders and ages.

For those who would like to be a member of the Benalla Racing Club, the fee would be $88 and it includes a membership and guest card that is effective for all of Benalla’s eleven horse races. It also gains you entry to the members-only bar and lounge and it gives you reciprocal membership to the turf clubs of Wangaratta and Wodonga.
