About the Belmont Races
The Belmont racecourse is the winter racecourse of Perth horse racing. It is one of the best wet weather tracks in Australia because of its top-notch drainage systems. Because of which, horse races during the winter months always push through despite the bad weather.
The Belmont horse racing track has a circumference of 1699 metres and a home straight of 333 metres. It is an oval-shaped track that offers a good run from the first turn to give an equal chance to all race horses. Races that are staged in this course run counter-clockwise.
The racing carnivals at the Belmont horse racing grounds does not contain any Group 1 or Group 2 races and most of its race meets are held from May to August. The most prestigious races that are staged in Belmont are the Sires Produce Stakes and Roma Cup in May and the Belmont Sprint in June. These three races are all Group 3 races.
The Belmont Sprint is an open handicap race that is staged over 1400 metres and it has a 2009 prize pool of $125,000. In 2009, the Belmont Sprint was won by Universal Ruler with Roman Time and Kens Double finishing second and third respectively. This race usually attracts the horses that have previously competed in the Roma Cup and it also features the best local sprinters available.
Meanwhile, the Roma Cup is a weight-for-age race which has a distance of 1200 metres and has a prize pool of $125,000. The 2010 edition of the Roma Cup was won by Vain Raider. Idyllic Prince and Grand Nirvana finished second and third respectively. Just like the Belmont Sprint, this race attracts the best local sprinters who will qualify to the race’s conditions.
Modem and Tribula have both won the Roma Cup and Belmont Sprint double in 2004 and 2003 respectively. There are several race horses who have garnered place finished in both races. Some races have also one of these races and gained a place finish in the other.
On the other hand, the WA Sires Produce Stakes is a race for two-year-olds that is staged over 1400 metres under set weight conditions. It has a prize pool of $250,000 and the latest edition of which was won by Motion Pictures. Miss Condition and Ihtsatune won second and third place respectively. This race usually attracts the competitors from the 1200-metre Group 2 Karrakatta Plate.
In 2006 to 2009, the WA Sires Produce Stakes was held at Ascot. It went back to Belmont during the 2009-2010 racing season because Belmont is the premiere winter racecourse in Perth. Once held to coincide with the autumn carnival of Ascot, this race serves as a lead-up race to the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes.
