About the Ballarat Races
Situated 113 kilometres west of Melbourne, the Dowling Forest Racecourse is home to the Ballarat Race Club. The club was formed in 1854 and it has called Dowling Forest home since 1972. Nowadays, it is now one of the major horse training centres in Victoria. The Dowling Forest complex is built on 300 hectares of land.
The Ballarat horse racing facility has an old and new track that caters to horse races from 1,000 metres to 3,400 metre steeplechase races. The track can hold up to 18 horses per races and its straight is at 450 metres. The Ballarat horse racing complex also caters to 300 horses in training.
Being one of the premiere race tracks in Victoria, the Ballarat Turf Club hosts about 30 races per year and most of which are staged on the grass track. The main attraction at the Ballarat racecourse is the Ballarat Cup which attracts about 17,000 Australia horse racing patrons. This race is staged every November and is the final event of the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival.
Aside from the Ballarat Cup, the Dowling Forest Racecourse in Ballarat has midweek races throughout the year and it also conducts the Family Fun Race Day, Christmas Party Race Day and Winter in the Forest Races.
Just recently, the Brumby Labor Government is funding a synthetic training track for $2.4 million to help the horses that are training here develop their strength. The Brumby Labor Government will contribute $2.14 million to the project and they will get the fund from their $86 million Regional Racing Infrastructure Fund.
The remaining $240,000 will be shouldered by the Country Racing Victoria and the Racing Victoria Limited.
