Balaklava Racecourse
Horse racing in Balaklava started in 1903 and racing meets are governed by the Balaklava Racing Club. The Balaklava Racing Club has the Balaklava Racecourse as its home turf which is an hour away from the central business district of Adelaide. Since Balaklava is a small town, racing meets are revered in this area and it is a great social event for locals.
The Balaklava Racecourse was built in 1907 and it has a circumference of 2053 meters and has starting chutes for 1000 metres, 1050 metres and 1400 metres. The highlight race in this race course is the Balaklava Cup every September which attracts an average of 12000 racing fans, punters and locals. The Balaklava Cup is also the largest country horse racing event in South Australia.
If you want a break from the intense horse racing action at the Balaklava Races, you can explore the natural wonders of the town that are not known to most Australians. Races here are staged counter-clockwise. Race days at Balaklava are usually held from February to November and they feature mid-week horse races.
Aside from the horse races, Balaklava also organizes social events leading to the races. They often conduct fashion competitions and even picnics to raise the awareness for the upcoming races. To get to Balaklava, you can take a 90-minute bus ride from Adelaide or you can drive your way to Balaklava by taking Port Wakefield Road from Brisbane. Then, you can turn left at Mallala and follow the way to Balaklava.
Full membership for the Balaklava Racecourse is worth $50 and social membership is worth $30. As a member of the Balaklava Racing Club, you will gain free admission to the 12 racing meets at the Balaklava Racecourse, a carpark for members, a Christmas BBQ with other members and a happy hour at the members bar during race days wherein you can get free beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks.
Members of the Balaklava Racing Club can also enjoy reciprocal rights at the Ballarat in Victoria and Gosford in New South Wales. You can also enjoy reciprocal rights at the following race courses in South Australia: Clare, Mount Gambier, Naracoorte, Port August, Port Lincoln, Gawler and Barrossa.
