About the Ascot Races
The Ascot Racecourse is a major racecourse that is located in Perth, Western Australia. It is located eight kilometres east of the Perth City Centre while the head office of the Western Australian Turf Club, Ascot’s governing club, is at the opposite side of Ascot. This racecourse has a circumference of 2000 metres and a 300-metre inclined straight.
This straight is considered by many as the toughest test to all stayers in Australia. Also, it has a modern and well-drained turf despite the fact that it is called as the “grand old lady” of Australian racecourses.
Three Group 1 races are staged here in Ascot and one of which is the Kingston Town Classic. Since 1976, it has undergone many name changes. From 1976-1979, it was known as the Marlboro 50,000 while it was known as the Western Mail Classic from 1980-83. From 1984-87, it went under the name Rothwells Stakes and it was known as the Winfield Stakes from 1988-1991.
This race was also called the Beat Diabetes 2 Stakes from 1992-1994 and it was known as the Fruit ‘N Veg Stages from 1995 to 2006. It was only in 2007 that this race was called the Kingston Town Classic. This race also went through changes in race distance. In 1999-2000, it was staged over 1600 metres. In 2003, it was staged over 2000 metres.
As of present, the Kingstown Town Classic is an Australian thoroughbred Weight for Age race that is staged over 1800 metres. Its current namesake is taken from the horse of the same name who won the said race in 1982. This Group 1 Australian horse racing event is held every December at the Ascot Racecourse in Perth, Western Australia. Sniper’s Bullet won this race in 2009.
Meanwhile, the Railway Stakes is a 1600-metre race that is ran under handicap conditions. In 2007, it had a prize pool of $1 million. The distance of this race has changed over the years. It was staged over 12 furlongs or about 2400 metres from 1894 to 1925.
That distance was trimmed to 1600 metres or eight furlongs from 1925 to 1973. From 1974 to 1983, it was staged over 1500 meters while it was first staged under its current distance in 1984. It was also Sniper’s Bullet who won the race’s 2009 staging.
On the other hand, the 2400-metre WATC Derby is a race for three-year-olds with set weights. This race is staged every April and the 2010 edition of it was won by Chartreux which is trained by David Hayes and ridden by jockey Brad Rawiller. The Neville Parnham-trained Bridgestone and the Wally Mitchell-trained Brother Mak finished second and third respectively.
