About the Albury Races:
Located in Lavington, New South Wales, the Albury Race Club has sixteen Thoroughbred races every year. The most famous of which is the Albury Gold Cup that is staged every March. This track dates back to 1840 when the first race in this track was run from the Hovell Tree to the botanical garden.
The Albury Race Club was formally established in 1881 and bookmaking was first allowed five years after. The totaliser system was on operation during the 1920 while the photo finish camera was first used in Albury in 1946. These developments made Albury one of the most sought after Australian horse racing tracks. In 2009, Albury was infused with a sand training track.
In 2008, about 20,000 spectators witness the Albury Gold Cup which carried a prize pool of AUD $125,000. The Albury Gold Cup is a two-day affair that is filled with exciting races featuring some of the top Thoroughbreds in Australia and other activities and festivities. It has been awarded as the Most Popular Country Feature Racemeeting by Racing NSW in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009.
During the 2010 Albury Cup, Growl proved to have the best strides in the competition as it toppled Deltona. Growl had a topweight of 68.5 kilograms and was jockeyed and trained by Brad Rawiller and David Hayes respectively.
The seven-year-old Growl went after Deltona in the straight part of the 2000-meter course to win by half a head. He’s an Angel clocked in at third. Also, Fantene won the 900m Flat Knocker in the record time of 50.91seconds. Coming in at second is Catch the Light while Jewel Colours came in at third. A $50,000 bonus will be awarded to the winner if it broke the 50-second barrier.
Aside from pulsating races, patrons with the best fashion sense are also awarded with prizes. Patrons are judged in three fashion categories: the Millinery, the Men’s Classic race wear and the Women’s Classic race wear. Contestants are judged by examination to determine if the fulfill the criteria. Afterwards, they will be given a number and they will parade for the final judging.
Other prominent Albury races include the Twilight races, the Commercial Club Race Day and the May Race Day. Also included in Albury’s horse racing calendar are the 300 Club Race and the January Race Day. Bets for these racing events can be placed through traditional Trifecta, Quinella, Maiden or Group bets although they also have the Jackpot bet that lets you pick the winners in six races.
The Albury race track also allows Future bets wherein you can predict the winners of the races at the start of the horse racing season. This is one of the most profitable bets in Albury for it carries a generous payout. Albury also has the Punter’s Challenge wherein teams of eight place $1500 wagers to predict the winner.
All of these exciting events in Albury can be experienced through race day entrance fees or through a AUD $90 annual membership fee. This membership fee includes admission to all races and access to the members-only bar at the Albury race track.
