Melbourne Races have taken over as the pinnacle of Australian racing and boast five city tracks at four locations. Melbourne races are run at Caulfield, Flemington, Moonee Valley, and at both Sandown tracks, the Sandown Hillside and Sandown Lakeside track.

Caulfield Races

The Caulfield Cup is the biggest feature race to be decided at the Caulfield races. First run in 1879, the Caulfield Cup is the traditional lead up race for the Melbourne Cup.

Caulfield also boasts some big prizemoney races for your horses with the Blue Diamond Classic for year old horses Melbourne’s own version of the Golden Slipper while the three year olds line up in the Caulfield Guineas, a race that is quickly shaping Australian racehorse breeding industry.

Flemington Races

I can see this racecourse being renamed to honour The Cups King, Bart Cummings. At the very least there will have to be a grandstand renamed after the Flemington based trainer who has won Australia’s most famous race on 12 occasions, the last in 2008 with Viewed ridden to victory by Blake Shinn.

Bart Cumming Melbourne Cup Winners:

  • Light Fingers (1965)
  • Galilee (1966)
  • Red Handed (1967)
  • Think Big (1974 & 1975)
  • Gold and Black (1977)
  • Hyperno (1979)
  • Kingston Rule (1990)
  • Let’s Elope (1991)
  • Saintly (1996)
  • Rogan Josh (1999)

There are 62 meetings at the Sandown racecourse each season with the highlight the Sandown Guineas on the final day of the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Moonee Valley Races

Moonee Valley Races is where legends are made during the running of the W.S Cox Plate, the time honoured Weight For Age championship of Australasia.

The Cox Plate is run over 2020m at Moonee Valley Racecourse in October and for the purists, it is the race that everybody wants their horse to win.
