The TJ Smith Stakes is a relatively new Group 1 Australian horse race for it was first staged in 1997. During the first staging of the race, it was then known as the Endeavour Stakes and it was just a Listed race back then. In 1998, the race was elevated to Group 3 and it was brought up to Group 2 in 2002. Ultimately, the TJ Smith Stakes became a Group 1 race in 2005.

This weight for age race for two-year-old horses has a race distance of 1200 metres and is held at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in March or April. The TJ Smith stakes is named after Australian trainer Tommy Smith and it has prize money of AUD$500,000. The inaugural TJ Smith Stakes was won by Mahogany while La Baraka followed suit in 1998. Ab Initio won the TJ Smith Stakes of 1999.

The TJ Smith Stakes of 2000 was won by Shy Hero and the 2001 TJ Smith Stakes went to Century Kid. In 2002, the TJ Smith Stakes saw Phoenix Park victorious while Spinning Hill galloped his way to victory in 2003. Dilly Dally is the 2004 TJ Smith Stakes winner while Shamekha emerge victorious in the 2005 edition of the race. Red Oog won the 2006 TJ Smith Stakes despite having bookmaker odds of 7.00.

The 57.5-kilogram Red Oog is trained by Joseph Pride and his partnership with jockey Hugh Bowman translated to a one-tenth of a length victory over Glamour Puss. Coming in at third is the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel while Virage of Fortune finished fourth. Stratum finished in fifth place while Spark of Life finished in sixth and last place. Red Oog won the race in 1 minute, 9.72 seconds.

The 2007 TJ Smith Stakes was won by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Bentley Biscuit as he finished the race with jockey Nash Rawiller in 1 minute. 10.62 seconds. Coming in at second is Black Ink which finished 1 1/3 lengths behind Bentley Biscuit. At third place is Virage of Fortune while Dance Hero finished fourth. Before the race, Bentley Biscuit was given betting odds of 4.60.

In the 2008 TJ Smith Stakes, Apache Cat showed its quickness as it won over six other competitors by finishing the sprint race in 1 minute, 11.80 seconds. Coming in at second is Reigning to Win while Takeover Target finished in third place. Magnus came in at fourth while Hurried Choice finished the race at fifth spot. Cent Per Cent and Is Amazing finished in sixth and seventh place respectively.

Takeover Target won the 2009 TJ Smith Stakes while Melito reigned over the 2010 TJ Smith Stakes by finishing the race in 1 minute, 9.21 seconds. Finishing behind Melito is the Les Bridge-trained Hot Danish at second place while Mic Mac finished third. Wanted took the fourth spot while Patronyme galloped her way to a fifth place finish. Metal Bender and Lord Tavistock finished in sixth and seventh place.

The 2011 TJ Smith Stakes was won by the Peter Moody-trained Black Caviar in 1 minute, 8.71 seconds. Second on the list is Hay List while at third place is Triple Honour. Finishing at fourth is Alverta while Hinchinbrook got the fifth spot. Response is on sixth spot while Crystal Lily took home the seventh spot. All Silent, Shoot Out and Shellscrape finished in eight, ninth and tenth places respectively while Demerit finished last.
