The Toorak Handicap

Though this race is originally known as the Toorak Handicap, it went through several name changes. Since the race’s inception in 1881 until 1980, it was known as such but its race name changed to “The IXL” from 1981 to 1984. In 1985 to 1989, the name of the race was again changed to “The Elders Mile”. However, the original name of Toorak Handicap was brought back in 1990.
Caulfield Races
Its group classification has also changed for it was a Principal race from 1881 to 1978. In 1979, the race was elevated to Group 1 status. The race distance of the race also changed as time went by. The Toorak Handicap had a distance of eight furlongs or about 1600 metres from 1881 to 1890. The race was stretched to add another furlong in 1891 but the nine-furlong distance was only used that year.
From 1892 to 1971, they once again used the eight-furlong race distance. In 1972, the race distance of the Toorak Handicap was adjusted to its present race distance of 1600 metres as a transition to the metric system of measurement. At present, the Toorak Handicap is one of the main races of the three-day Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival.
The Toorak Handicap is held every October during Guineas day together with the Yalumba Stakes and the Caulfield Guineas. Given its race distance of exactly one mile, it attracts some of the best mile-distance race horses in Australian horse racing. This Australian horse race is staged under Open Handicap rules which give mile sprinters an advantage against stayers.
The inaugural Toorak Handicap was won by Josephine and since then, only four horses have managed to win back-to-back Toorak Handicap titles. Saxony was the first one to do so when he won in 1948 and 1949. The Toorak Handicaps of 1952 and 1953 was taken by Desert Breeze. In 1963 and 1964, Nicopolis dominated this race and Umrum is the latest two-peater when he won in 1999 and 2000.
From its humble beginnings, the Toorak Handicap is now one of the most anticipated spring races in Australian horse racing and it always draws a capacity number of competitors. Thus, the barrier draw is very important for participating horses since it can dictate their fate on the race.
In 2009, the Toorak Handicap carried a prize pool of $350,000 and the majority of it was won by Allez Wonder. Gold Salute finished in second place while Rock Kingdom grabbed third spot. Coming into the race, Allez Wonder carried a 41.00 betting odd. Pre-race favourites Raheeb and Black Piranha finished in fourth and sixth place respectively.
The 2010 Toorak Handicap will take place on the 9th of October at the Caulfield racecourse and the fireworks for the race are already starting at the online horse race betting websites.
