The Thousand Guineas is the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival horse race equivalent of the Caulfield Guineas. This mile-long horse race is exclusively for three-year old fillies and it takes place every October at the Caulfield Racecourse. This race was inaugurated in 1946 and Sweet Chime became the first winner of this event.

Originally staged on Caulfield Cup day, the Thousand Guineas was converted into a midweek horse race in 1988. On the schedule of the Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival, this race is now sandwiched by the Caulfield Guineas that is conducted on the previous weekend and the Caulfield Cup on the successive weekend. This race is also the top event for three-year-old fillies by the Melbourne Racing Club.

From 1946 to 1971, the Thousand Guineas had a race distance of eight furlongs or about 1600 metres.

Following Australia’s conversion into the metric system in 1972, the distance of this Group 1 race was adjusted to exactly 1600 metres and Toltrice was the winner of that year’s Thousand Guineas.

From 1946 to 1978, the race is classified as a principal race and its status was elevated to Group 1 in 1979. No race horse has won this race more than once and this shows the competitiveness of the fillies that compete in the race every year. Given its set weight rules, the older mile-distance fillies usually have the advantage. Also, the better-performing fillies will have an advantage coming into the race.

A good measuring rod for the outcome of the Thousand Guineas is the 1600-metre, Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes which is staged on Turnbull Stakes day a few weeks before the Thousand Guineas. Since both races have the same distance, the winners and place getters of the Edward Manifold Stakes usually perform well at the Thousand Guineas.

Over the last ten years, three horses have won the Manifold Stakes-Thousand Guineas double: Special Harmony, Alinghi and Gallica. Another lead-up race to the Thousand Guineas is the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude.

Consequently, the top fillies from the Thousand Guineas post great performances during the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes and the Group 1 Crown Oaks. Over the last 20 years, the Thousand Guineas has provided six Crown Oaks winners: Miss Finland, Magical Miss, Arborea, Special Harmony, Northwood Plume and Richfield Lady.

In 2009, the Thousand Guineas has a prize pool of $500,000 and the race was won by pre-race favourite Irish Lights with jockey Glen Boss on board. Another race favourite, Melito, got second place with Cory Brown as jockey. Faint Perfume finished third. Another pre-race favourite, Sister Madly, finished in tenth place.

The 2010 Thousand Guineas will take place on the 13 of October and it had a peak number of 231 nominations. Head on now to your trusted online bookmaker and place your bet on the fillies that will bring you good fortune once the barrier gates open.
