The Stradbroke Handicap is a middle-distance race that is held over 1400 metres of the Eagle Farm Racecourse. Among all the horse races during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, this open handicap race has the highest prize purse which amounts to $1 million. The Stradbroke Handicap is annually held every June and punters highly anticipate the outcome of this race.

Given its race distance of 1400, the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap is ideal for middle-distance race horses that have a great mix of speed and stamina. It is also possible to pull off a victory during the home stretch especially if the horse has the stamina to come from behind. Even race horses that excel in mile-long races will have an advantage in this race.

The Stradbroke Handicap was first held in 1890 and the inaugural race was won by Pyrrhus. The race was named after Lord Stradbroke who is a relative of the race’s founder, Admiral Rous. The length of the race underwent changes as well. In its early years, the Stradbroke Handicap has a race distance of six furlongs or approximately 1200 metres. That would be changed in 1953 when the distance was adjusted to seven furlongs or about 1400 metres.

In 1973, the race distance was adjusted to exactly 1400 metres due to the introduction of the metric system in Australia. That year, the race was won by Lucky Cloud. The official name of this race also went through some changes. The original name of the race is the QTC Stradbroke Handicap and it would stay that way until 1981.

In 1982, the race’s name was changed to the QTC Elders Handicap and it would stay that way until 1988. In 1989, the race’s name reverted to the QTC Stradbroke Handicap. Starting as a principal race, the Stradbroke Handicap became a Group 1 race in 1980 with Bemboka Yacht winning the first Stradbroke Handicap under Group 1 classification.

From 1942 to 1945, the Stradbroke Handicap was not conducted due to the Second World War. Meanwhile, the 1980 Stradbroke Handicap brought controversy when Ducatoon was initially declared as the winner. However, subsequent tests show a positive swab on the race horse and he was stripped of the win which was eventually given to Bemboka Yacht.

Throughout the history of the Stradbroke Handicap, there have been eight multiple winners of the Stradbroke Handicap. The first one to do so is Babel which won in 1895 and 1896. Then, Gold Tie also won consecutive races in 1918 and 1919. Next to achieve the feat is Highland in 1925 and 1926 while he was followed by Petrol Lager in 1934 and 1935.

Lucky Ring also won consecutive Stradbroke Handicaps in 1949 and 1950. His achievement was then copied by Daybreak Lover in 1984 to 1986 while Rough Habit also followed suit in 1991 and 1992. The latest race horse to win multiple Stradbroke Handicaps is Black Piranha which won in 2009 and 2010. In 1958, the 46.5-kilogram Wiggle became the only two-year-old race horse to win the race.

Given the quality of opposition in the Stradbroke Handicap, trainers often let their race horses ply their trade in lead-up races such as the Group 2 QTC Cup and the Group 1 Doomben 10,000. After the Stradbroke Handicap, competitors often race next in the Group 1 Winter Stakes.

In the 2000 Stradbroke Handicap, Landsighting won the race in 1 minute, 21.4 seconds with Mr. Innocent and Brighter Scene finishing at second and third place respectively.
