The Patinack Farm Classic is the most prestigious Group 1 weight-for-age sprint race that is staged over 1200 metres of straight track at the Flemington racecourse during the Emirates Stakes Day of the spring racing carnival every November. In 2007, its conditions were changed from a handicap to a weight-for-age race to prepare its entry to the Global Sprint Challenge in 2008.
The Patinack Farm Classic is the second to the last leg of the Global Sprint Challenge and it is staged after the Group 1 Sprinters Stakes at the Nakayama racecourse in Japan every October and before the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint that is held every December at the Sha Tin Racecourse.
The other races which are included in the Global Sprint Challenge are the Group 1 Lightning Stakes in Australia, The Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in England, The Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Group 1 July Cup and the Newmarket Racecourse and the Group 2 Centaur Stakes at the Hanshin Racecourse in Japan.
The change in the Classic’s schedule complemented the new 1200-metre, Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes which is formerly known as the Ascot Vale Stakes. This race is included into Derby Day and the best runners at the Coolmore Stud Stakes usually compete in the Patinack Farm Classic as well.
With no turns in consideration, the Patinack Farm Classic is a pure test of speed and stamina wherein a strong run for 1200 metres is needed. This run at the straight course of Flemington has been won by the best Australian sprinters over the years.
Some of the best sprinters that have won the Patinack Farm Classic are Vain in 1969, Century in 1973, Maybe Mahal in 1976, River Rough in 1983 and 1984, Special in 1988, Hareeba in 1994, Rubitano in 2002, Takeover Target in 2005 and Miss Andretti in 2007.
Since 1991, the track record for the Patinack Farm Classic has been broken for a number of times. This signifies the level of competition that this race brings which makes it a top weight-for-age sprint race. A race horse has a good shot in winning this race if it possesses a combination of speed and strength.
In 2009, the race carried a prize pool of about $1,000,000. All Silent made a dash from the last 400 metres of the race to grab the top spot at the last 100 metres to eventually win the race. Meanwhile, Wanted raced on pace and held a short lead before succumbing to All Silent to finish second. Bank Robber came in at third.
Before winning the Patinack Farm Classic, the Grahame Begg-trained All Silent won the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes during the Turnbull Stakes day. Other recent winners of the race are Gold Edition in 2006, Miss Andretti in 2007 and Swick in 2008.
