Tagged as the race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup is a 3200-metre open handicap race for horses of at least three years of age. This race is conducted annually every first Tuesday of November at the Flemington racecourse. Melbourne Cup Day attracts more than 100,000 to the said racecourse as they witness Australia’s most prestigious horse race.

Flemington Races
This race was first held in 1861 and was originally held over two miles of 3,218 metres. This distance was adjusted in 1972 when Australia adapted the metric system. The minimum handicap weight for the race is 49 kilograms while the top allocated weight must not be less than 57 kilograms. Older horses must carry more weight.
As of present, the Melbourne Cup has a prize money pool of $6,175,000 with trophies worth $125,000. The winner of the race will get $3.3 million while the tenth place finisher will get $115,000. The owner of the horse will get 85% of the prize money while the trainer and the jockey will get 10% and 5% respectively.
The 2010 Melbourne Cup marks the 150th year of existence of the race and the 24 local and international horses that compete in this race will give everything that they have to win. Since there are a lot of variable that lead up to the race, it is hard to plot a trend as far as the winner’s profiles are concerned.
The usual lead-up races for the Melbourne Cup are the Group 2 Saab Quality and the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes which are held on Derby Day. Together with the Caulfield Cup, the Melbourne Cup forms what is tagged as the double of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Since both races attract a huge number of bettors, bookmakers open the betting months before the actual races.
Since 1993, the Melbourne Cup has become a much-awaited racing event by horse racing fans globally. A number of international horses have competed in this race due to the prestige and the big prize pool on the table.
Perhaps the most successful Melbourne Cup winner is Makybe Diva for she won three straight Melbourne Cups from 2003 to 2005. She is the only race horse that has achieved such feat and it is the reason why the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes is named after her.
As for the foreign competitors for the Melbourne cup, the Irish-owned Vintage Crop won the race 1993 and Media Puzzle took the top spot in 2002. Meanwhile, English stayers Give the Slip and Persian Punch got place finished second and third in the 2001 edition respectively.
Japanese race horses Delta Blues and Pop Rock finished first and second respectively in the 2006 Melbourne Cup while English galloper Bauer just missed the top spot of the 2008 Melbourne Cup by a narrow margin. In 2009, Shocking won the race with International Crime Scene and Mourilyan finished second and third respectively.
