Formerly known as the Melbourne Stakes, the LKS Mackinnon Stakes was first staged in 1869 and the inaugural race was won by Glencoe. Cosmic Court won in 1949 and 1950 while Rising Fast dominated the 1954 and 1955 LKS Mackinnon Stakes. Belmura Lad scored back-to-back victories in this race in 1980 and 1981 and he is the last horse to win multiple LKS Mackinnon Stakes titles.
