A race that is rich in tradition, the Epsom Handicap was inaugurated in 1863 and it was first won by Dundee. Time went by and it has evolved into one of the two highly anticipated Group 1 mile races at the Randwick racecourse, the other being the Doncaster Handicap in April.

The Epsom Handicap was named after the fabled English racecourse Epsom Downs wherein the Epsom Derby is annually held. During Epsom Handicap Day, this Australian horse race shares the spotlight with other Group 1 races namely the 2400-metre The Metropolitan and the 1600-metre Flight Stakes.

Throughout the history of this 1600-metre handicap race, the Epsom Handicap back-to-back has only been achieved six times. Masquerade first did the feat in 1881 and 1882 while Melodrama followed suit in 1907 and 1908. The Epsom Handicaps of 1932 and 1933 was won by Chatham while Toi Port got the two-peat three decades after in 1963 and 1964.
Super Impose showed a super run at the Epsom Handicaps of 1990 and 1991 to take the titles in both races while Desert War’s double came in 2004 and 2005. Amounis also won the Epsom Handicap twice but in 1926 and 1928. No race horse has ever won the Epsom Handicap thrice. Out of all the Epsom Handicap winners, 2001’s Final Fantasy recorded the fastest winning time with 1 minute, 22.45 seconds.

Meanwhile, the slowest winning time was registered by 1952 Epsom Handicap winner High Law with 1 minute, 43 seconds. Given that the race is a handicap race for race horses of at least three years old, the Epsom Handicap is a free-for-all race and surprise winners are possible. Also, its current distance of exactly 1600 metres was established in 1972 as a result of the transition to the metric system.

Less than a decade after the conversion to metric system, the Epsom Handicap was given Group 1 status. Also, the year 2007 is a historical year for the race for it was not staged due to the outbreak of the equine influenza. During the Epsom Handicap’s over 140 years of history, it was the first time that the race was not held.

The Epsom Handicap usually attracts the best mile-distance race horses and even some of the middle-distance stayers. More often than not, the race is won by less known or unknown horses but some top horses like Filante and Shogun Lodge have managed to win it over the recent years. In 2009, the Epsom Handicap had a prize pool of $350,000 and a big portion of it was taken home by winner Rock Kingdom. Pre-race favourites Rangirandoo and Road to Rock finished second and third respectively.

With the 2010 Epsom Handicap about a month away, this is the best time for you to cast your bets on who you think will run the table at the Epsom Handicap. Visit your trusted online horse race betting websites and place your money on your chosen thoroughbreds.
