The Crown Oaks is the premier event for three-year-old staying fillies that is held at the Flemington racecourse during the third day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival in November. This 2500-metre race is the equivalent of the Victoria Derby which has the same distance but is reserved for colts and geldings. The Crown Oaks is a set weight race that is strictly for fillies.

In 2009, it had a prize pool of $1,000,000 with trophies amounting to $5,000. It was won by the Bart Cummings-trained Faint Perfume with Valdemoro and Savsbelle finishing second and third respectively. The Group 2 Wakeful Stakes at Derby Day on Flemington is considered as the traditional lead-up race to the Crown Oaks.

The Crown Oaks has been claimed by some of the great stayer fillies like 2008 winner Samantha Miss which also won the Princess Series during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival before getting a place finish at the WS Cox Plate. Other noteworthy winners are Magical Miss in 2001, Special Harmony in 2003 and Miss Finland in 2006.

The race is ultimately won by a classy filly with incredible endurance and the Wakeful Stakes proves to be the barometer of Crown Oaks success for the race has produced 10 Oaks winners, three runner-ups and two third placers for the last 20 years. The recent horses that have achieved the Wakeful Stakes-Crown Oaks double are Hollow Bullet in 2004, Serenade Rose in 2005 and Faint Perfume in 2009.

Before winning the Crown Oaks, Tuesday Joy and Timbourina finished second in the Wakeful Stakes in 2006 and 2003 respectively. In 2009, Faint Perfume ran third in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas before winning the Wakeful Stakes and eventually the Crown Oaks. She stayed on the back of the pack and surged through the middle of the track during the home straight.

The Crown Oaks day is also known as the Ladies Day due to its non-racing events such as the Fashions on the Field Contest.
