Cox Plate
Betting on the Cox Plate 2012:
Cox Plate
Imagine what you can do for two minutes. You can shoot some photographs, make a video or watch the WS Cox Plate. Believe me, the last option is the most exciting among the three. The Cox Plate was first staged in 1922 and the inaugural race was won by Violoncello. The race itself is named after Moonee Valley Racing Club founder William Samuel Cox.
Through the years, the race distance of the WS Cox Plate went through a number of changes. From 1922 to 1942, the distance of the race is nine and a half furlongs or about 1900 metres. That was adjusted to ten furlongs in 1943 and that distance was retained until 1971.
After Australia adapted the metric system in 1972, the race distance was fixed to 2000 metres. However, an additional 50 metres was added to the race distance of the WS Cox Plate in 1974. In 1986, the race distance was shortened by ten metres to bring its current distance of 2040 metres.
A race that is rich in tradition and prestige, the WS Cox Plate is often participated by Australian Horse Racing’s crème of the crop and is regarded as the “greatest two minutes in sport”. Thus, this 2040-metre Group 1 horse race is often taken by a top-flight race horse. Also, the weight-for-age rules of this race give an advantage to the better-performing horses.
Since the inception of this race, the WS Cox Plate has been won more than one by some of the best race horses in Australian horse racing. The legendary Phar Lap became the first multiple-WS Cox Plate winner when he won back-to-back races in 1930 and 1931. His feat was duplicated by Young Idea in 1936 and 1937 and by Beau Ville in 1940 and 1941.
Tranquil Star also won the WS Cox Plates of 1942 and 1944 while Flight also scored a back-to-back in 1946. Hydrogen also achieved a two-peat in 1952 and 1953 while Tobin Bronze got the gems out of the WS Cox Plates of 1966 and 1967. The 1999 and 2000 WS Cox Plates was won by Sunline while the 2001 and 2002 editions were won by Northerly. The famed Kingston Town is the only race horse to have won three WS Cox Plates and he did it in three-peat fashion from 1980 to 1982.
Because the best of the best compete in this race, legends are born in the WS Cox Plate. Also, the schedule of this race adds to its grandeur as it is held in the after the Caulfield Cup and the Victoria Derby and before the Melbourne Cup. Also, this race is part of the Emirates World Series Racing Championship or the global grand prix of horse racing.
In 2009, the WS Cox Plate had a prize pool of $3 million with trophies amounting to $50,000. The race was won by So You Think with Manhattan Rain and Zipping coming in at second and third place respectively. This is only the fifth career start for the Bart Cummings-trained So You Think. Race favourites Whobegotyou and Heart of Dreams finished in sixth and seventh place respectively.
The 2012 Cox Plate will be held on the 23rd of October at the Mooney Valley Racecourse. So far, defending champion So You Think has a 3.80 betting odd while Shoot Out has a 6.50 betting odd. Metal Bender, Whobegotyou and Theseo have betting odds of 12.00, 13.00 and 17.00 respectively. Cast your bets now at your trusted online bookmakers and join in the excitement of the 2012 Cox Plate.
