Prior to 2007, the Coolmore Stud Stakes was known as the Ascot Vale Stakes. Aside from that, the schedule of the staging of this race has been changed as well. Originally run during early part of the spring, the race was transferred to Derby Day in 2006 wherein it now runs on the same day as the LKS Mackinnon Stakes, the Myer Classic and the Victoria Derby. The race also gained Group 1 status in 2006.

The change in schedule and classification of the Coolmore Stud Stakes also brought changes on how three-year-old horses are being prepared for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival campaigns. While there are still trainers who prefer that their horses compete in the Caulfield Guineas, some would choose to start with the Coolmore Stud Stakes. There are even some that aim to compete on both races.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes was first held in 1933 and the inaugural race was won by Shakuni. Until 1965, this 1200-metre sprint race was staged during the autumn racing carnival and is exclusively for two-year-old race horses. In 1969, it was exclusively offered to three-year-old horses and that set-up has not changed since. At present, the Coolmore Stud Stakes is run at the Flemington Racecourse.

While no horse has won this competition more than once, some of its past winners went on to build successful racing careers. Some of the legendary winners of the Coolmore Stud Stakes are High Caste, Royal Gem, Comic Court, Vain, Rose of Kingston and Manikato.

Speed is the name of the game at the Coolmore Stud Stakes given its short distance and set weights rules. Therefore, the top-performing sprinters already have an advantage coming into the race but surprises can happen given the 1200-metre race distance. Some of the winners of this race went on to win other sprint races such as the Golden Slipper Stakes and the Blue Diamond Stakes.

In 2009, the Coolmore Stud Stakes had a prize pool of $500,000 and most of it went to race winner Headway. Coming in at second is King Pulse while finishing third is Shellscrape. Pre-race favourites Irish Lights, Demerit and Wanted finished in fifth, sixth and seventh place respectively.

The 2010 Coolmore Stud Stakes will happen on the 30th of October as top sprinters once again blaze the Flemington Racecourse. As early as now, you can now place your bets on your trusted online horse race betting websites and cheer on the sprinters that you have chosen to victory. Remember, their victory increases your earnings.
