Kicking off the three-day Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival, the Caulfield Guineas dates back to 1881 with the first-ever race being won by Wheatear. Throughout its century-old tradition, no Australian race horse has won the race twice. This proves that stiff competition is what every three-year-old race horse faces when it competes in this 1600-metre set weights race.
The winners of the Caulfield Guineas usually go on to win more Group 1 races throughout their career. History tells that winners of the Caulfield Guineas go on to perform well at the WS Cox Plate more than any other Group 1 race. Some of the Australian horse racing greats that have won this race are Redoute’s Choice, Manikato and original Australian Racing Hall of Fame inductee Tulloch.
The Caulfield Guineas is held at the Caulfield Racecourse on Guineas Day, a great day in the Caulfield races calendar together with the Toorak Handicap and the Yalumba Stakes. The fillies-only equivalent of this race, the Thousand Guineas is contested the Wednesday after the Caulfield Guineas. Finishing off the three-day racing spectacle is the $2.5 million, Group 1 Caulfield Cup.
Although no race horse has won the Caulfield Guineas more than once, two trainers have each won two Caulfield Guineas over the past decade of the race. Steven King won with Show a Heart in 2000 and Helisso in 2002 while Dye won with Encounter and Kenwood in 1997 and 1998 respectively.
Due to military uses, the Caulfield Guineas was held at the Flemington Racecourse from 1940 to 1943. During those years, the winners of this open set weight race are Lucrative, Tea Cake, Great Britain and Lawrence respectively.
In 2009, the Caulfield Guineas had a total prize purse of about $1,000,000 in prize money and a big portion of it went to race winner Starspangeledbanner with jockey Dan Nikolic. Coming in at second is Carrara with jockey Cory Brown on board while finishing at third place is Manhattan Rain with jockey Brad Shinn. Pre-race favourites Denman and Trusting finished in seventh and eighth place respectively Starspangeledbanner finished the Caulfield Guineas in 1 minute, 35.6 seconds.
The 2010 Caulfield Guineas will take place on the 9th of October and it promises to be another great horse race. Thus, you must place your bets on your chosen thoroughbreds and find out if they will bring you luck at the 2010 Caulfield Guineas.
