The Caulfield Cup is an Australian thoroughbred horse race that is not only rich in tradition but in prize money as well. This race which dates back to 1879 currently has a prize purse of $2.5 million and trophies worth $44,000. Easily, the Caulfield Cup is the richest 2400-metre race in the world. This left-handed grass race is open to race horses of at least three years old.
Since Newminster’s victory in the inaugural Caulfield Cup, only two horses have managed to win back-to-back Caulfield Cups. Poseidon was the first one to get back-to-back titles in 1906 and 1907 while Rising Fast was the king of the Caulfield Cup in 1954 and 1955.
However, other race horses have won this race more than once but not in consecutive years. Paris won in 1982 and 1984 while Uncle Sam took the Caulfield Cups of 1912 and 1914. The 1922 and 1925 Caulfield Cups was won by Whittier while Ming Dynasty became the last two-time winner when he ruled over the 1977 and 1980 Caulfield Cups.
Given the handicap nature of the Caulfield Cup, the better-performing and older horses usually have an advantage coming into the race. This is one big reason why top-flight horses win the race more often than not. Some of the high-class race horses that have won the Caulfield Cup in recent years are Let’s Elope, Northerly, Ethereal, Elvstroem and Master O’ Reilly.
The Caulfield Cup is the highlight of the Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival and it is often regarded as a lead-up to the more prestigious Melbourne Cup which happens every November. In fact, a strong run at the Caulfield Cup can get a race horse an outright ticket to the Melbourne Cup. At present, eleven horses have achieved the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double and the last race horse to do so was Ethereal in 2001.
Scobie Breasley proves to be the most successful jockey in Caulfield Cup history for he has won five Caulfield Cups including four straight from 1942 to 1945. Trailing him is Damien Oliver with four victories while Neville Sellwood, Frank Demsey and Mick Mallyon all have three Caulfield Cup triumphs each.
In 2009, the Caulfield Cup was won by the Bart Cummings-trained Viewed. Roman Emperor, Viewed’s stablemate, came in second while Vigor took home third place. This victory makes Cummings the most successful race horse trainer in Caulfield Cup history with seven titles. Next to Cummings is Tommy Smith with four wins while CT Godby, Jack Colt and H. McCalman each have three wins.
