The Rosehill Guineas was first held in 1910 with Electric Wire winning the inaugural race. The race back then was held over seven furlongs or about 1400 metres and it was classified as a Principal race. The race would be elevated to Group 1 status in 1980 while the race distance was adjusted to nine furlongs or about 1800 metres in 1915. At present, this race has a prize pool of $500,000.
In 1948, the race distance was adjusted to ten furlongs or about 2000 metres and the race was fixed to exactly 2000 metres in 1973 following the conversion of Australia to the metric system. In 1980, the first year that the Rosehill Guineas is held as a Group 1 race, the legendary Kingston Town won the race. Though the Rosehill Guineas is about a century old, no thoroughbred has won the race more than once.
Obviously, the Rosehill Guineas is held at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Western Sydney. The Rosehill Racecourse is one of the two premiere racecourses in Sydney and the other one is the Royal Randwick Racecourse.
