The Queen of the Turf Stakes is exclusively for fillies and mares and it is staged over 1500 metres at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse every April. The Queen of the Turf Stakes is held at the same day as the BMW Stakes, the George Ryder Stakes, the Storm Queen Stakes and the Golden Slipper Stakes. The Queen of the Turf Stakes was first held in 1972 with Refulgence winning the inaugural race.
During Refulgence’s win, the race had a distance of eight furlongs or about 1600 meters. The following year, the race distance was adjusted to exactly 1500 metres following Australia’s conversion to the metric system. That year, the race was won by Millefleurs and the race distance was used ever since. In 1979, the race was elevated from a Principal race to a Listed race with Never Despair winning that year.
In 1985, the Queen of the Turf Stakes was once again elevated to Group 3 status with Casual winning the race that year. In 1991, the race was promoted to Group 2 status and Ricochet Rosie won that year. Finally, the Queen of the Turf Stakes reached Group 1 status in 2005 with Ike’s Dream winning that year. No filly or mare has won the Queen of the Turf Stakes more than once.
Rosehill Garden, the home turf of the Queen of the Turf Stakes, is a grass track that has a circumference of 2048 metres in circumference and a home straight of 408 metres with sweeping turns. Races here are staged clockwise. Other Group 1 races that are held in Rosehill Garden are the Coolmore Stud Classic, the Ranvet Stakes and the Golden Rose.
