The George Ryder Stakes

Rosehill Race Track

The George Ryder Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age Australian horse race that started in 1973 with All Shot winning the inaugural race. The race has a distance of 1500 metres and it is usually a sit and sprint race due to the low number of horses that participate in this race. With few competitors, the pressure is off from the top thoroughbreds who can easily win the race.

Despite the short history of the race, many thoroughbreds have won it more than once. Manikato won in 1979 and 1980 while Emancipation took home successive George Ryder Stakes in 1983 and 1984. During those times, the race distance of the George Ryder Stakes is only 1400 metres. In 1985, the race distance was adjusted to 1450 metres and the 1500-metre distance was first used in 1986 until present.

Other multiple George Ryder Stakes winners include Campaign King in 1987 and 1988 and Lohnro in 2003 and 2004. This horse racing extravaganza is held every April at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. The grass turf of Rosehill has a circumference of 2048 metres and a home straight of 408 metres. The racecourse features sweeping turns and all races here are staged clockwise.

The George Ryder Stakes is held during the same day with the BMW Stakes, the Queen of the Turf Stakes and the Golden Slipper Stakes. The prize pool of the George Ryder Stakes is at $400,000 and the winner of the race gets a ticket to the Doncaster Mile. After the George Ryder Stakes, thoroughbreds usually head on to the 2000-metre Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the 1400-metre All Aged Stakes.

In the 2000 George Ryder Stakes, Al Mansour took home the gold in 1 minute, 30.53 seconds. Finishing behind him are second-place Bonanova and third place Hire. Landsighting won the 2001 George Ryder Stakes in 1 minute, 27.67 seconds over runner-up Shogun Lodge and third place finisher Crawl. The 2002 George Ryder Stakes went to Lord Essex in 1 minute, 29.51 seconds.

Shogun Lodge and Crawl once again finished in second and third place respectively behind Lord Essex. Lohnro won his first of two George Ryder Stakes in 2003 with a time of 1 minute, 30.71 seconds. Lohnro won his first George Ryder over Dash for Cash and Defier. The following year, Lohnro won again in 1 minute, 27.24 seconds over Grand Armee and Private Steer.

The 2005 George Ryder Stakes was won by Court’s in Session in 1 minute, 28.25 seconds.  Finishing at second place is Patezza while Sky Cuddle finished third. Racing to Win is the winner of the 2006 George Ryder Stakes by finishing the course in 1 minute, 27.89 seconds. Racing to Win bested runner-up Paratroopers and third place finisher Lad of the Manor.

Haradasun bagged the 2007 George Ryder Stakes in 1 minute, 29.22 seconds over second place finisher Mentality and third place finisher Apache Cat. The 2008 George Ryder Stakes was won by Weekend Hussler in 1 minute, 31.72 seconds over Racing to Win and Casino Prince. The George Ryder Stakes of 2009 went to Vision and Power in 1 minute, 31.57 seconds over Black Piranha and King Mufhasa.

Danleigh won the 2010 George Ryder Stakes in 1 minute, 30.27 seconds over Dao Dao and King Mufhasa. Meanwhile, the 2011 George Ryder Stakes was won by Rangirangdoo in a tight finish over runner-up Love Conquers All. The third place went to Triple Elegance while Aloha came in at fourth. Rangirangdoo is trained by Chris Waller and was guided to victory by jockey Corey Brown.
