Randwick Race Course

During the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the Flight Stakes is the only Group 1 Australian horse race that promotes girl power for it is devoted for three-year-old fillies. This annual horse race is conducted every October at the Randwick Racecourse and it was inaugurated in 1947 with Nizam’s Ring as the first-ever winner. The race is named after the top-notch mare Flight that won the Cox Plates of 1945 and 1946.

Ever since this race started, the top female race horses in Sydney have contested this race for over 1600 metres. However, it was only listed as a principle race from 1947 to 1978 and it carried Group 2 status from 1979 to 1984. It was elevated to Group 1 status in 1985 and the Flight Stakes was won that year by Tingo Tango.

The Flight Stakes is held on the same day with two other Group 1 races: the 2400-metre The Metropolitan for stayers and the 1600-metre Epsom Handicap. This race is also part of the Princess Series together with the Group 2 Furious Stakes, the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes and the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes that has provided nine of the last eleven Flight Stakes winners.

Throughout the history of the Flight Stakes, no filly has won this race more than once. This shows the competitiveness of the field of female horses in the annual staging of this horse race. Since it is the only Group 1 race for fillies at the Sydney Spring Carnival, it is participated by the best and the up and coming fillies within the area.

The 2009 Flight Stakes carried a total prize pool of $300,000 and the race was won by pre-race favourite More Joyous with jockey Nash Rawiller on board. Coming in at second is Sister Madly and jockey Brad Shinn while taking home third place is Hurtle Myrtle with Glen Schofield as her jockey. Coming into the race, More Joyous carried a 2.90 horse racing betting odd. Coming in at fourth is Melito with jockey Corey Brown.

The other pre-race favourites for the 2009 Flight Stakes, Deer Valley and Run For Naara which both had 9.00 betting odds, finished at fifth and eighth place respectively. With the 2010 Flight Stakes just weeks away, you can now cast your bet on your favourite horses at your trusted online betting websites.
