The Doomben Cup is a weight for age race that was first held in 1933. During the inaugural race, Pentheus got the victory in a race that was then held over ten furlongs or about 2000 metres. In 1938, the race distance was adjusted to eleven furlongs or about 2200 metres and the race was won that year by Brown Lance. At present, the Doomben Cup has a prize purse of $505,000.
In 1989, the Doomben Cup had a race distance of 2160 and the race was won by Abstraction. In 1990, the race distance was adjusted to 2020 metres and it was Eye of the Sky who won the race. Ever since the Doomben Cup was held, two race horses have won the race more than once. Earlwood is the first multi-Doomben Cup winner when he won back to back in 1959 and 1960. Then, Rough Habit won three straight Doomben Cups from 1991 to 1993.
The Doomben Racecourse is located at Brisbane, Australia and is just seven kilometres away from the central business district of Brisbane. The 26 metre-wide race track has a circumference of 1715 metres and a home straight of 341 metres. Races in this course are staged counter-clockwise. Aside from the Doomben Cup, the other Group 1 races held here are the BTC Cup and the Doomben 10,000.
The race distance of the Doomben Cup makes it ideal for race horses that excel in middle-distance races. A combination of strength and endurance is essential for a race horse to win the race. Trainers often have their thoroughbreds participate in the Group 2, 1800-metre Hollindale Stakes and the Group 2 PJ O’Shea Stakes.
