The Champagne Stakes was first held in 1864 and it was won by Yattendon. This Group 1 Australian horse race is held over 1600 metres at the Royal Randwick Racecourse as the last major race for two-year-old races during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. Since it is a set weights race, colts and geldings must weigh 56.5 kilograms while fillies and mares must weigh 54.5 kilograms.
Ever since the race was held, it has been a mile-long race and sprint to middle-distance runners will benefit from its race distance. Thoroughbreds must be able to maintain a fast pace throughout the race while having enough boost to propel his way to the top. The current prize pool of the Champagne Stakes is $400,000 and the ideal lead-up race for it is the 1400-metre AJC Produce Stakes.
Royal Randwick has a circumference of 2213 metres and a home straight of 410 metres. Its sweeping turns makes come-from-behind victories highly possible while its wet weather conditions are not that good due to its poor drainage system. Despite the rich history of the Champagne Stakes, no thoroughbred has won this race more than once.
