The A.G. Hunter Cup is Harness racing competition in Harness racing that runs over 3050 metres at the Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. In 2009, it is one of the world’s richest handicap events with a AUD$400,000 prize pool.

This race was established in 1949 and it was not staged in 1992. The current 3050-metre course was initiated in 2001 with M.B Reed and Another Party winning it at 2:01.4. The race’s defending champion is Mr. Feelgood USA with jockey Anthony Butt and trainer Timothy Butt with a time of 1:59.8.

This year, 49 horses will battle it out to cross the finish line first. Defending winner Mr. Feelgood has what it takes to win the Hunter Cup for the second year in a row. He currently has a betting odd of 15.00.

The final day of the Flemington Spring Carnival is always a terrific day with the highlight being Australia’s greatest mile race, the Emirates Stakes. It’s a race that brings together the best from all over the country and this year it has an added bonus in that the Cox Plate winner, So You Think, is backing up.

The brilliant three year old could cap of a memorable carnival for Bart Cummings if he can be successful, but he is coming back in distance and taking on some specialists at the 1600 metres.

Black Piranha and Road to Rock are much better suited here than in the Cox Plate although the latter has drawn badly in the widest barrier. Gold Salute’s second in the Caulfield Guineas is wonderful form for this while Sniper’s Bullet’s third last Saturday was full of merit. The two most interesting runners are coming from opposite ends of the spectrum. Eagle Falls backs up from an impressive win in the “Salinger” over 1200 metres while Vigor, who was unlucky not to get a start in the Melbourne Cup, comes back from a third place in the Caulfield Cup. Two completely different preparations but with one goal in mind and that is to capture this prestigious Group One event.

Patinack Farm Classic

The other Group One on the day is the Patinack Farm Classic run over 1200 metres. It’s a small field headed by Australia’s most popular horse, Apache Cat, who sent the crowd into raptures with his last start win at Moonee Valley.

He won’t have it all his own way here as he once again has to take on stable-mate Mic Mac and David Hayes’ star sprinter Nicconi also returns after a six week break. Turffontein was runner-up to Eagle Falls in the “Salinger” and the decision to keep him at 1200 metres suggests he is still sharp and fresh.

The most interesting decision was trainer Neville Begg’s to keep last year’s “Emirates” winner All Silent in the sprint and not try to repeat last year’s success. He was simply stunning in winning the “Gilgai” and only time will tell whether another run down the straight was the “right call” but he is such a wonderful horse punters would be game to leave him out of their calculations.
