Doncaster Mile

The Doncaster Mile, also known as the Doncaster Handicap, is held over 1600 metres at the Royal Randwick Racecourse. This race is part of the Sydney Racing Carnival but was originally scheduled on Easter Monday. The spring equivalent of this open handicap race is the Epsom Handicap and racing trainers are trying to achieve the Epsom Handicap-Doncaster Handicap double.

The prize pool of the Doncaster Mile is $2 million and the winner gets $1.2 million. The second, third and fourth place finishers will get $400,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively. The owner, trainer and jockey of the winning horse will also get trophies worth $9,500, $1,000 and $1,000 respectively as well. The Doncaster Handicap was first held in 1865 with Dundee finishing the race.

Given the high quality of participants that the Doncaster Handicap attracts each year, it is tough to pull off a victory from this race but four-year-old race horses are having much success in recent years. The tough field of the Doncaster Mile lends to the fact that Mildura became the first multiple winner of the race when he won back-to-back in 1940 and 1941.

Mildura’s feat was followed by Blue Legend when he won in 1946 and 1947 while Slogan II also won the Doncaster Handicaps of 1956 and 1957. Tudor Hill also achieved the same feat in 1959 and 1960 while Fine and Dandy also won the Doncaster Mile in 1961 and 1963. Super Impose also won back-to-back Doncaster Handicaps in 1990 and 1991 while Pharaoh won the Doncaster Handicap in 1994 and 1995. Sunline is the latest multiple winner by taking home the title in 1999 and 2002.

Super Impose is a special winner for he has won both the Doncaster Handicap and the Epsom Handicap in the same year for two consecutive years. Punters for the Doncaster Handicap would also want to win the Doncaster Handicap-Epsom Handicap double bet for it has the potential for a big payout. With the thrilling action that it brings, the Doncaster Handicap has been the highlight race of autumn racing at Royal Randwick.
Randwick is just five minutes away from the Sydney Central Business District and it features largest racetrack in New South Wales that has a circumference of 2,227 metres and a home straight of 410 metres.

The Royal Randwick Racecourse features sweeping turns and an uphill slope on the home straight. All races at the Randwick Racecourse are governed by the Australian Jockey Club and are staged counter-clockwise.
Aside from the main race track, the Royal Randwick Racecourse also has a four training tracks, a swimming pool for horses and a bull ring. Being the racing and training headquarters in Sydney, the training facilities at Randwick are being used by 20 trainers who handle 650 race horses among them. In 1992, the Australian Jockey Club gained permission from Queen Elizabeth II to change the course’s name to Royal Randwick.

Since the Doncaster Handicap comes before the Epsom Handicap, it is used as a tune-up race for the latter because of the same race distance and quality of opposition. Meanwhile, the 1500-metre, Group 1 George Ryder Stakes is the best tune-up race for the Doncaster Handicap as four George Ryder Stakes winners last decade went on to win the Doncaster Handicap.

In the 2000 Doncaster Handicap, Over won over Sunline and Zastov with the time of 1 minute, 35 seconds. Meanwhile, Assertive Lad won the 2001 Doncaster Handicap over Shogun Lodge and Weasel Will in 1 minute, 35.9 seconds. Shogun Lodge once again finished in the runner-up spot at the 2002 Doncaster Handicap behind Sunline which won in 1 minute, 35.2 seconds.

In the 2003 Doncaster Handicap, Grand Armee took home the top prize over Dash for Cash and Boreale in 1 minute, 36.8 seconds. In the 2004 Doncaster Handicap, Private Steer dashed Grand Armee’s hopes for back-to-back victories with a time of 1 minute, 35.5 seconds while Ambulance finished third. In the 2005 Doncaster Handicap, Patezza won over Court’s In Session and Danni Martine in 1 minute, 35.9 seconds.

Racing to Win won the 2006 Doncaster Mile over Johan’s Toy and Bentley Biscuit in 1 minute, 34.1 seconds. Meanwhile, Hardasun took home the 2007 Doncaster Mile over Mentality and Divine Madonna in 1 minute, 38 seconds while Triple Honour emerged victorious at the 2008 Doncaster Mile over Pinnacles and Casino Prince in 1 minute, 38.6 seconds.

The 2009 Doncaster Handicap was won by Vision and Power over Black Piranha and Whobegotyou in 1 minute, 36.6 seconds. In 2010, Rangirangdoo came out as the winner at the expense of Road to Rock and Brilliant Light in 1 minute, 34.2 seconds. The 2011 Doncaster Handicap will be held on the 23rd of April and punters are already checking the Doncaster Handicap betting odds to see the thoroughbreds that are favoured to win the race.
